Today arrived on Celestion Vintage 30 and one Emi Private Jack. I wanted a Red Fang instead of the V30, but it costs too much.
I'll let you know when I've tried and tested them

I first really listened to a pair of G12-65s last weekend at my pal Chuck Berry's place. (I s**t you not, that's his real name!) He's a real fine player too, and very knowledgeable about Dumbles.

I took my 50W '70s ODS over which he put thru its paces. The cabinet is a Glaswerks 2x12 with G12-65s. (Gary, if you see this are they just stock current production?). Compared with my EV12L/Fane Studio 12L it was superb with the old style ODS circuit. Not sure if it would sound as fine with a later design ODS though. At that level as others said, it becomes amatter of taste I think.

My favorite: Altec 417C x 2 in oval back Dumble-style cabinet. It's all there. It never leaves the house, though. Too heavy and valuable.
Favorite for gigs: Demeter 2x12. Eminence drivers. top half is open back (Fender combo style) and bottom is front ported.
Small gigs: Either a TL806/EVM12L or a Vintage30 in a front ported cab, or sometimes a JBL G125 in front ported cab.

The Vintage 30 sounds much different (to me) when loaded in a tuned/ported cab. It seems to be better balanced and not so mid-voiced. I couldn't live with it in an open backed cab.

Your mileage may vary. Check with your dealer for details....

Looks like the EVM is edging out the 12-65.

I've been watching the horse race to see who is going to win. The EVM-12L seems to be ahead by a nose.

I'm waiting on a used EVM-12L 8-Ohm to arrive from 80 miles away. I picked it up for about $120 from flea bay. I don't have the cab done for it yet, so I wasn't in a big hurry to get it. It looks like the shipper wasn't in a hurry either, because it's been 11 days since the money was in his hands and I still don't have shipment confirmation. He promised 11-15 days, so it shouldn't be too much longer.

I'm essentially done with the head cab and things are assembled, but I still need to finish the treble bleed and a couple of really minor tweaks. The 12-Way switch for the treble bleed is on back order for three months and so I need to select another option. I ordered this rig as a kit on 7/7/11, and I just used it out for the first time on Sunday. Used my pedal board through the amp's clean channel, but it still worked great as a passive/clean amp.

Oh, I still have to open up 3 of the chassis mounting holes that are just a tiny bit snug. I went 1/64" (yeah, that's tight, but I used to be a machinist....) over and that's just too tight on a few. I probably made an imperfect template....

Basically, I'm a Suhr MM II, speaker/cab, few minor tweaks, and a couple cables away from the end of the project (the Sennheiser e609 is in Santa's bag....). Monday night, after I got the aluminum on done on the grill, I decided to pass on the piping after all. I like the subdued/stealthy look of all black...

A little tease for my full build thread (once I get the 806 cab done).

I built the two rack space head cab from scratch, assembled the kit, etc...

If I do this type of rig again, it'll be 1/2 inch deeper. The right angle power cord is virtually touching the back ("oval" hole as access and covering from the amp chassis to the bottom) on the G Major II with the grill and back essentially flush. NO EXTRA ROOM AT ALL.
