Finally starting to mock up my ODS in its box! (Finished)

Post by keithrick »

Hey Guys,

I have finally found some time to start mocking up my ODS clone. It has only taken 12 months! Built 4 amps since then! LOL

The cab is my first attemp at Dovetails. They are on the side! But everthing is starting to fit together. The wood used was Poplar from Home Depot. Nothin' fancy.

My Cab builder flaked so I used it as an excuse to buy some wood working tools! I even bent up my own chassis on my brake and it shows!

So you have to picture the following:

I am respraying the front gloss black with white lettering. The current finish is a Hammerite. (I know it will be a bitch)

The front with a matching color 2 inch strip of wood underneath the chassis with a tan basketweave below.

The back will have a 6" wood piece from the bottom partially covering the tubes and hiding the reverb.

Final shots are about a week away! Any comments or suggestions are always welcome.

Looks great. Amazing what some hard work can do to cheep wood. I had a friend years ago who made furnature from discarded pallets and sold it in flea markets.

I've always wanted to learn to do dovetails. How about some instructions?

Bob,

It seems hard but is rather easy. All you need is a Dovetail jig, saw and a router with roundover and dovetail bits. I spent under $300 for all the tools.

Honestly, it is easier to look at the instructions that come with the jig. All you need to do is be able to measure and cut wood accurately. (Harder then it appears for some )

It takes about 3 hours for me to make a box.

If anyone goes for it some notes:

1. Make sure you orient the wood where you want the dovetails to show. (top or sides)

2. Make sure you sand the dovetails flush before rounding over the edges. The bit is on a wheel the runs along the wood. If your wood face is uneven so will your roundover cut.

3. Make sure your router bits are the correct cutting depth.

4. Keep the router moving so you don't create friction burns.

Thx. I need to get a better router and a jig then. 3 hours is really nothing compared to the time we spend on these amps. Add the time to finish sand, stain and varnish and it's still pretty reasonable.

Looking good, Keith. Lucky for me, my buddy Loren does all my cab work. (Otherwise, my amps would be duct taped to 1x12 shelving. )

It's turning out nice.
A belt sander is a handy tool as well when leveling out dovetails before rounding over.

keithrick,
Your cabinet is looking good.
How about a side picture so we can see your dovetail work?

Here are the completed pics of my amp. It ended up being the #124 circuit but with a few changes for personal taste. I even took the hybrid one tube reverb out. Might try it again, though.

It does have three funtioning relays that control the Mid boost, PAB and channel switching. Very nice sounding amp! Must be those familiar Fender values!

Andy- Sorry, about pinching the name! I was thinking of something different from Overdrive Special and well

Nice work man! Is that a Hammond A-100 on the left? I had one a guy guy gave me for free. Trouble was only the lameass percussion stuff was the only sound it would emit. I've gotten 3 small combos outta the speakers though. On another site a fellow remarked that old organs are to the FX & amp builder what the buffalo were to the movement Westward. I kinda wish he woulda shaddup about that one!

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Noel,
I believe it is a C-100 or E-100. It does have the crappy percussion. But the tone generators sound pretty close to a B-3  I have the leslie cab on the other side. But to be honest this is what my 2-3 year old daughters play in our "band." We have a great sound! LOL

Bob,
I really enjoyed making the cabs. Everyone on these boards can suprise themselves and make a decent cab. We already have the DIY mentality, right? There is the learning curve, my dove tails are on the side instead of the top. But I could have scapped this box and and bought a new $20 piece of wood. No big deal.

BTW-The next box I make I will try to do a photo essay showing how to place make Dovetails. It is very easy!

I bent the metal and punched the holes on this chassis as well! As a matter of fact, I remember that I had to stand on this chassis (this was the first one I made) because I bent the metal in the wrong order and couldn't get the 1" lip to bend perpendicular to the bottom. I also used a sledge hammer at one point. But I learned the right order to bend the metal.

You had also noted at some point that I would have trouble wiring up the tone controls because the lip was 1". I made a faux cardboard front and wired all the controls then installed them in my chassis. Thanx for pointing that out! :D

Mat, I am going to poist clips at some point. All I have is a digital video camera so I don't know how they will turn out. Not to mention, everyones playing is so much better then mine.
