A couple of HRM Clips..

Post by glasman »

Here are a couple of clips of an HRM Skyline amp I have been messing around with. Let know what you think...

Would you tweak the internal controls?

The amp is a 50W 6L6, standard skyline stack, internal loop and reverb. (built in my Zingaro platform chassis).
input trim set at about 27K off of ground. I may back it off a touch.

The clips were recorded with no boosts enabled, just overdrive.

I did add a touch of verb in the mix to make it sit the way I like it... once a verb man, always a verb man..

Settings

Gain : 12:30 (1M 30%)
Treble :12:00 (30% audio taper)
Middle: 11:00 (30% audio taper)
Bass : 11:00 (30% audio taper)
OD gain (see below) 250K 30%
OD Level : 09:00 (1Meg 30%)
Presence :10:30 (1uf 2K linear)

Standard stuff.

Low Gain clip - OD Gain (between OD stages) at about 10:00

Slightly higher gain. OD gain at 12:30.

Hi Gary,

nice sound, albeit I would think the high-content is a bit buzzy. I personally would back of the treble quite a bit and bring up the mids more.

Cheers,

I think are right. I will retest the stack after my ears rest a while :).

But I was comparing the soundcloud links to my mp3 and the SC I think are buzzier.

What do you think, here are the files (same ones I uploaded to SC).

Hi Gary,

I listened back to your SC and Mp3s (as hosted on your page) with my Beyerdynamics DT770.

The SC are a tiny bit more fizzy, but even with the mp3s I hear some buzz/fizz that I find a bit distracting.

Especially on the low notes. And the bloom is not there on the low notes.

Hope you don't mind my critique!

How loud was the amp when recording? What speakers? Which mic?

Cheers,

Is that off the plate or cathode? Speaker? Might be worth trying the cathode follower plexi style stack.

Thanks for the comments, I am going to tweak on the stack and gain trimmer a bit more. Tone stack is off of the plate.

The amp was not very loud for the recording. The speaker was a G1265 in an open back enclosure. A pair of MCA SP1 for the mics. Mics slighly off-axis about 24" in front of the cabinet.

I have built a few Ripper amps and to be honest never cared for the sound of the CF / tonestack with this type of amp. Also found the phase flip between clean and OD bothersome.
