Long story short, after rolling some tubes and putting a Sugarcone in there, that amp just sounds even more fantastic. And BASS...holy cow, it's got a ton of bass even with the bass control turned way down. My Zendrive into the clean channel on that amp sounds killer. And loud! 4 6V6s are loud!
Dumble content: so I go back to my 2-hole, KT-90 powered low plate non-HRM, and it just doesn't have as much bass even through a 2x12 cabinet, unless I turn the bass control way up. And the MV on this amp has to be pretty darn high (3:00?) before it can match the volume of the Metro.
So... I'm wondering if it's just a question of the voicing of the different amps, or how much has to do with the fabled "4-holes are better than 2-holes" principle. I know a Deluxe, which the Metro is modeled after, is reputed to be bass heavy. I know that my Dumble tends to sit really well in a mix: doesn't sound thin, but doesn't step on the bass player.
I've yet to hear a 4-hole Dumble amp to compare. Maybe at the next Portland fest.
