My TK Metropolitan

Post by greiswig »

So I picked up a used Tone King Metro 1x12 combo awhile back, primarily so I'd have a backup amp. I'd gotten a little jaded on the tone from my first amp, a Bad Cat, and fell for the Metro.

Long story short, after rolling some tubes and putting a Sugarcone in there, that amp just sounds even more fantastic. And BASS...holy cow, it's got a ton of bass even with the bass control turned way down. My Zendrive into the clean channel on that amp sounds killer. And loud! 4 6V6s are loud!

Dumble content: so I go back to my 2-hole, KT-90 powered low plate non-HRM, and it just doesn't have as much bass even through a 2x12 cabinet, unless I turn the bass control way up. And the MV on this amp has to be pretty darn high (3:00?) before it can match the volume of the Metro.

So... I'm wondering if it's just a question of the voicing of the different amps, or how much has to do with the fabled "4-holes are better than 2-holes" principle. I know a Deluxe, which the Metro is modeled after, is reputed to be bass heavy. I know that my Dumble tends to sit really well in a mix: doesn't sound thin, but doesn't step on the bass player.

I've yet to hear a 4-hole Dumble amp to compare. Maybe at the next Portland fest.

Sounds cool George. Too soon for another amp&speaker fest? I've got a pretty good sounding SFDR....

If the next PDF is as small as the latest one LMK. We could have done most of that around my bench and busted out the irons. ;O)

George have you experimented with the slope resistor?
If you have a 150K in it, try a 100K.

You can also experiment with the 10K tail on the bass pot.
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!
