New Dumble LITE completed...Thanks Norm!

Post by brownnote »

Hey everybody,
First post here...been lurking for a while reading lots of great discussions.
Just finished my first D-Type circuit thanks to a great layout and a lot of generous help with questions, parts and such from the Normster!

The first thing I want to say is...this is a great sounding little amp.
And considering the approx $300 pricetag it's absolutely stellar!

After hearing some D "clones" I was hooked, the thing about this little beast though, is that you can get some great overdrive from the clean channel when you push it over the edge, and at around 22 watts it's at a very nice SPL.

Hopefully I'll have some clips to post soon, but in the meantime here's some pics:

I had a chance to hear this amp today and A/B it against my $300 Dumble Lite. Cranked, both of these amps sounded great! Brownnote's amp has a bit tighter and deeper bottom end and is more articulate on the top. I think mine is pretty close but maybe a little spongier feeling in the mids. We both agreed that the Dumble circuit has a special magic when mated to a 6V6 output section.

These are great sounding amps and definately worth taking the time to build! (I hope that doesn't sound like I'm bragging. )

IMHO these JJ 6V6S's are not like any other 6V6 I've heard. They sound fatter and more like a 6L6 at lower volume. They're simply magic in these amps.

I agree. I listened to mine at the amp fest yesterday with other folks playing it. The bloom and complexity of the tone is so different than any other design. I 55 and I've finally found my tone. :D

I've just finished a couple of hours of knob twiddling, bias fidgiting, and trim pot tweaking with this amp, and I am very happy with the tone I'm getting...happy is an understatement.

Here's the thing...I'm running Bendix 5992 / 6V6.
Plate voltage is 450 / bais 20mA, I don't know what other 6V6's besides the JJ's could handle that.

I have to say the JJ's are super, and it's very fortunate that they sound so good, operate at such high voltages and are so affordable.

But...if you have the opportunity to get your hands on a pair of Bendix DO IT!

The tone is chewey, present, warm and sweet...the dynamics, feedback and bloom I was getting on my note runs and chord work on the clean side was very exciting.

The OD side was so wicked, I don't even know what to say...just unreal harmonic feedback.

I'm breaking out the powerbook, and going to try to get some clips going if I can scrounge up the right adapter.

Normster / Brownnote,

Is there a parts list for the D-Lite? Recommended Tweaks, Iron, Caps...etc? Nice job on both amps. Very sweet sounding.
