OT: Evil Robot Magnatone clone does fusion tones

Post by dogears »

Pretty cool little 18 watt 6V6 amp. Based on Magnatone 214.

I dragged her back into the recoridng area and recorded this before work today. Got lucky with the unison line..... I was going for more textures on this one to show the complexity. Not so many notes as usual. Spent about 20 minutes total on this one.....

Showing the Robot in a different light than what we usually hear from Phil X in his demos. It does the classic rock thing really well.

Carruthers straight in. Volume B is 95% up and the tone is up about 75%. Not overly loud actually. No effects.

Recorded with GT Hardtop a couple inches back. No EQ or other stuff in mix. Just a touch of delay and verb added.

Amp had a nice chirp to it and reminds me much of what I liek about Dumble tones. Interesting as the circuit could nto be more different!

Nice one Scott!
Love the gradual transition into feedback and, like you said, nice chirp! I like that you let this track breath a little more than usual.
I for one really like good 6V6's. Much easier to get 'em to give up the goods at a practical, realistic volume level.
Bravo :!:

Very nice Scott!

I have a schematic for a Magnatone 113, 2x6V6 from 1955, it's a bit different from the usual period 2x6V6 in that V1 is 220K/3K3 on both sides. Never seen that before on a mid-fifties design.

What's different about the 214?

I liked that clip..Mids had a velvety smoothness on the single line passes..Missing some of the meat of coarse but still the same very pleasing musically..

Thanks guys....

Actually this bad boy has 270K plates!!

I attached a single input schematic that is close. The real amps and the Robot have two sets of hi/lo inputs, each feeding one half of V1. Seperate and not jumped.

Hi guys. Amp is a combo. Looks like some sort of Weber 30 watt ceramic speaker.....

JJ 6V6 output tubes. Amp is biased real hot and with close to 400V. I woudl not try NOS there!

I did however stick in a nice i61 Mullard 12AX7 in V1 and a nice RCA Blackplate 12AX7 in V2

Great clip! I'm surprised that it sounds very Dumbly.

Those varistor-based vibratos truly sound awesome, especially in stereo with each channel receiving alterate LFO feeds. Wonder where and how the builder sourced those varistors. Hard suckers to find. What's cool about the Maggie vib sound is that in addition to the phase modulated signal, there's also a hint of amplitude modulation in there. Makes it sound really animated. Cool amp you got there!

Wooo! That amp is downright eccentric! Very stiff power supply for two 6V6, assuming this is a '50s/'60s design. That no doubt has something to do with it.
