Re: Ceriatone Overtone HRM Transformers recomendation
Hi,
I got a really nice sounding 50w output transformer from Brandon at Bludotone. If they are good enough for Larry Carlton they are good enough for me. The price was very reasonable I think and certainly cheaper than the Mercurys.
Not sure if he sells these as a matter of routine, maybe I just got lucky. Worth a try tho.
Rob.

Try the Magnetic Components stuff that you can get from Triode Electronics, great price, sound great and ship quickly.
Re: Ceriatone Overtone HRM Transformers recomendation
You are paying a lot of extra $$ for the Mecury name and pretty paint job.
If that is important to you then by all means go for the Mercury but there are other transformers that sound just as good or better.
Magnetic Components.
Hammond
Edcor
Heyboer
To name a few.
On my last 100w build I used the Mag Comp transformers and they seem to work and sound great!
For example
Mercury http://www.mercurymagnetics.com/pages/mainframe.htm
PT------- $175-205 (depending on Toneclone or Amer Pro Series)
Choke ----$40
Output---$245
Total-----$460-490
Magnetic Components http://store.triodestore.com/transformers.html
PT---------$78.02 (Twin Reverb 100w 40-18004)
Choke----$16.48
Output----$65.16 (100 watt 4,8,16 ohm output)
Total------$159.34
So are you rich?

not to sound like a douche but if Mercury magnetics are worth $$$ and are that much better than yeah but if not then i could care less about transformers....if it was a car then maybe different opinon, cause chicks would be a factor!

Well that didn't work...yalesmith wrote:not to sound like a douche...
Re: Ceriatone Overtone HRM Transformers recomendation
pretty funny but i do not care about name brand etc....just wanted to get some feedback on transformer selection...... myth or fact..... As an example qualtity caps are a plus and i have seen what replacement caps can do....resistors on the other hand not so sure about...I am but a hobbyist douche who likes to tinker.
Thanks

I use Magnetic Component transformers for a lot of builds and in my Dumbles. Cost is a factor for me.
However, it is no myth that Mercury transformers are better just take a good look around at the pro builders and then ask some of them why they use Mercury.

Henry seems to like the Mercury trannies, but I'd rather spend the extra change on some extra good tubes.
Your mileage may vary.

Re: Ceriatone Overtone HRM Transformers recomendation
FWIW, after considering the amount of time that goes into building an amp, I buy quality transformers. They can have a profound effect on tone and response and are too expensive to have to go through several lesser quality units only to end up paying for a replacement.yalesmith wrote:pretty funny but i do not care about name brand etc....just wanted to get some feedback on transformer selection...... myth or fact..... Buy good stuff the first time 'round. There are some people here that can help you find good prices on quality iron.
Re: Ceriatone Overtone HRM Transformers recomendation
I had talked with Henry at his shop about transformers and he showed me his stock and that he had tried and continued to try other brands at that time period but really liked the Mercury trannies.

yalesmith, word to the wise.
Read your replies carefully.

I spoke to nik at ceriatone and he truly is a nice guy, way before I bought anything from him. He was always quick to respond and always very detailed. He also advise I'd go with the Mercury Magnetics transformer. I guess my queston now is where do I go to get the best price? Thanks all for help!

Re: Ceriatone Overtone HRM Transformers recomendation
Did you ask Nik about his lower pricing from Mercury. I found out after I had already ordered my OTS50 that he is a dealer and gets special pricing on them. One guy from this forum said it only ended up costing $70 more than if he went with the Ceriatone Iron.
