ASW speakers?

Post by greiswig »

I have lots of speakers, but I'm a perpetual tweeker. The 2x12 oval-open back that I currently use houses a G12-65 reissue and a Scumnico. The Scumnico adds some nice flavor to the Celestion, broadening the range a bit and providing a different pick attack feel.

I also have an old EVM-12L, some original Celestion G12-65s, and a Celestion Gold. In a different amp, I have a Jensen Tornado. Then, too, I have a Sholz Sugarcone (#2... #1 sucked, and got sent back! QC issues?) that sounds like a woodier, warmer version of the EV.

I'm kind of curious about all the hype surrounding two speakers from Austin Speaker Works, and wondering if any of you have tried them out enough to compare them against any of the speakers I am familiar with: the KTS-70 and the Elegante AlNiCo. I've heard that the KTS-70 is in some ways better for a D-style amp than a 12-65 is, even. No idea about the Elegante except for the price and the hype on TGP.

Thoughts?

A client sent me four Elegantes to put in a cab he had me make for him. They sound like a big/clean 80w Alnico Blue, with just a touch less volume.

I tried them in a 4x12 cab with my 71 Super Lead. I don't advise that, though. My ears rang for 4 days after five minutes of playing.

Not saying they aren't good speakers, they just aren't the right one for a 71 SL, IMO.

Hey, Jim. Generous of you to give a review of these speakers. I'm still digging the Scumnico and the SA1075!

The ear-ringing comment and the comparison to the Blue makes me think the Elegante has that characteristic 2-4kHz bump that the Blue has? My Bad Cat really liked that, but my D'Lite did not.

I'm sure it didn't help that I had the 71 SL set at 7-8 on the volume knob. 8)
