Which WGS speaker for my Thiele cab?

I picked up an empty EV TL806 style cabinet. I was wondering if you folks had experience with any of the WGS speakers in this style of cabinet. I don't have the bones for a EVM right now.

Would the Eminence Delta Pro fit the bill? It is supposed to be their EV-alike, and runs about $100.

I've used an Delta-Pro 12A. Compared to the EVM it's quite a bit darker but similar in character.

Delta Pro is a good cheaper more mid driven alternative. Used EV-12-L's are about 100 on E-bay usually I think..

I've tried an ET-65 and British Lead in a TL806 and they do NOT work. The tuning is all wrong for these so they resonate like an SOB. If you try one anyway, start at a low volume so you don't bottom it out an damage the voice coil.

Recently received an old ('86) OEM EV12L taken out of a wedge monitor, from an AG forumite who found it overpowered the other speaker he had in a 2x12 cab.

I ordered a Boogafunk Thiele cab for it!

I'm reluctant to go with the Delta Pro because of the lack of high freq extension. My reference cabinet is a Dumble styled 2x12 oval back with Altec 4517C's (metal dust caps). I absolutely love it, but it's heavy and the speakers are somewhat valuable.

Exactly the advice I was looking for. Most times its better to know what not to order.....

Celestion is pretty adamant about not using their drivers in closed back or ported boxes...although many do it, it's not optimal.

That is interesting in light of the thousands (millions?) of Marshall 4x12 closed-back cabs filled with Celestion drivers.

mlp: a rousing "no shit ! ". I remember when Celestion had an online tech support "mr speaker" or some such dopey name. I wrote asking for Thiele-Small details for the speakers, so I could design an optimal box. He basically told me not to bother. "Our speakers are made for open box use sir"....ummm ok.

They are rumored to be working on an EV-12-L style speaker using the Lead-80 frame and magnet, but voiced more in the EV vein. That better be made to drop right into the EV parameters if they want people to embrace it...

I still have two TL boxes - one with a 12L, one with a Delta Pro. The Delta Pro does a credible imitation but lacks the upper highs. Does perform extremely well in a TL box at half the benjamins. Old clips and discussion here:

I built a cab using the parameters, the same volume but not the same shape as the boogie one and with a et65 great I cant see it getting better for my needs. That being said put the same speaker in the boogie not so good. I didn't like the boogie cab because it was too short so I made mine taller and not as wide and no bracing, so I think it resonates a little. I'll say the et

There's plenty of highs on the Delta Pro; it doesn't shimmer but neither does the EVM 12. I've played my amp through both and the percieved lack of highs will depend on how you set your amp.

I have two EVM 12L classics (reissues) in an semi open back VOX 2 x 12.

What I do notice about the EVM's is that they don't seem to color the tone of the amp much.
They seem to really reveal the amp in all it's glory or also lack of.....
So you have to adjust your knobs carefully.
They have made tuning my amps a bit difficult because of this.

Sometimes we don't think a speaker has much top end or shimmer but that can be from our listening perspective.
I like to crouch down and listen to the beam of the speaker for the true sound. It is usually a lot more biting than the "room" sound would lead you to believe.

I don't have a ton of experience with different speakers because of the cost involved in trying different ones but I haven't regretted once buying the EVM's.
I would however, like to try some 12-65's sometime. Possibly the WGS ones.

Before I had another 2 x12 with WGS V30 and CL80 that sounded pretty darn good together.
I use that cab now for a couple other amps, one being a 6V6 Rocket.

FWI-possibly could matter I think he's called Dr. Decibel now. I recently inquired for some better detail than what is provided on the Celestion site; similar to high level of detail that Eminence provides.
