Overdrive Deluxe

Post by ampdoc1 »

I guess I quit paying attention to the Dumble builds a couple of years ago. I like what these amps do, but prefer the tone and response on my Express builds.

So, I just heard the Dumble Overdrive Deluxe clips for the first time today. WOW! For me it has the Dumble smoothness, and the Express tendency to slip off into controlled feedback.

Has anyone here guessed at a schematic of this build? Is it likely this is the same as the #13 schematic that's been around a while? I don't remember that having tremelo!

Anyone got a schematic for this?

I don't know which schematic it is, but it is my impression that all Dumble inspired amps have the tendancy towards controlled feedback. I didn't think this was unique to the Express?

My only hands on experience is my Fuchs ODS50 and it definitely does that. Especially with the rock switch engaged. PAB doesn't matter so much for my amp, but the rock switch has the biggest effect on bloom and controlled feedback. FWIW, I had trouble getting those qualities until I changed the speaker to a Sugarcone and put in a new set of power tubes. Now it is there, but it has become VERY loud. I can barely set the master to 9 O'clock.

I could sure be wrong! My only on-hands experience with D amp designs was the two D'Lites I built. The sound was good, but neither had much "bloom" or strong harmonics. Luckily, both players were jazz guys who really weren't looking for something over the top.

On the other hand, I've built 3 or 4 Express variations, and every one of them was good for two or three harmonic overtones just about at will. Of all the amps I've heard/played thru the years, the Express is hands down MUCH more responsive to harmonics.
