Re: 183 tweaks
Good one without the snubbers Scott, What bright cap?
on the rock jazz switch do you have a center off? on/off/on
I just changed to a on/off/on in the center off ( pab ) it is more 3-D
also did the same thing with the bright cap 300pf/ 0 / 500pf.
Im sure funk said the snubbers were 25pf on the #183 not 250pf.
thank you.

Re: 183 tweaks
I've heard more tonal shift on the same amp recorded on two different days, in the same studio with the same mic(s), mic-pre, player, etc.dogears wrote:Are you serious? No EQ used at all. Nobody would ever believe these were different amps if they did not know. In fact, I way prefer clip 2 here. There are so many variables in recording that unless we get the amps side by side in a controlled clip test, you can't draw any conclusions. You keep posting the other 183 clip, yet here is one recorded at teh same time that sounds totally different. Mic position change? Tone stack settings??
Here is 183

Here is the GW http://www.scottlernermusic.com/2010/Ph ... tweakB.mp3
Reputation, collectors-value, prestige/bragging-rights aside, I would take either amp (were I interested in using that tone) and be equally as happy.
Your work is appreciated on many levels, Scott.

He's never been in that amp.Im sure funk said the snubbers were 25pf on the #183 not 250pf.
None of the pictures that got leaked show the snubbers.
Therefore anything regarding the snubbers he reported is information that originated with me and was second or third hand by the time it got to him...

Re: 183 tweaks
Thanks for the voltage information ampdork. Now you have sparked my interest on #183
I have been saving this 42 year old iron for a special project. I’m sure that #183 did not use a quad of GEC KT-77 power tubes so it will not be a carbon copy of Dumble’s work. Nor would I won’t it to be.
Take care, Steve.

Scott, cool playing in both clips, but judging by just these 2, the Dumble sounds way better to me. The GW is very stuffy and closed in the low end, and not nearly as open or sweet in the mids and top. Sterile is the word. You have to be able to hear that. Maybe do another clip with the bass turned down on the GW and try to dial in the EQ by ear? #183 is very balanced and does not have monster bass like a lot of clones. With a Tele or strat I turned the bass up quite a bit on many of my clips with it. Cant wait to get my Quinn clone and put it next to 183 and do A/Bs. Should be very soon. If you dial the GW in by ear, you should be able to fool us. I have a hard time telling what is what in some of my own clips with my different clones and #183. I have a few clips of 183 that sound like shit because of the way I dialed it in and recorded it. I have a very hard time believeing you like the GWs in the above 2, but to each their own. If you really do, stop messing around, leave it as it is, and stop trying to make it sound WORSE to you!
Re: 183 tweaks
Here is a video of the clip without midboost. For clips Atlast and Atlast2, I played the 335.
No matter what I record, both you and Tag will always claim the Dumble far superior. I accept that, and it may even be true. But, this amp is really really close, far closer than Tag saying it is totally different. Especially when considering that the clips were recorded with vastly different guitars, different amps(tubed totally differently), different mic positions, different software, different mix and effects, different mic pre for the SM57 (FET for 335 clip, tube mode for newest clips), different guitar cable (Hosa silver for newest and Mogami for 335), etc etc.......
Please note that this is the 335, you see my CSA on the couch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRiBHsQc ... re=channel

I was talking about my microphone preamp! Not the amp...
And yes, the AtLast1 clip was the CSA.... The AtLast2 is your 335.

I am not saying far superior, but different, and personally I do like the Dumble more. There are so many clones now, and personally, I do not find anything any closer over all than the early twoRocks and brunos were. There are just many more clones that capture this part of the D tone or that part of the D tone. IMO, nothing has captured ALL of the D tone yet. I do not own 183 anymore, and even if i did, I would gladly say something sounded as good to me if it did. Nothing is going to devalue that amp. Dumble made it, and the tone is to die for. I have stated my Artist is EXTREMELY close, but still not dead on. I am hoping the Quinn will be as close as is possible to sounding the same, and it should. Shad has a great ear, measured everything, and played the amp for hours and hours. He s a good player too, and that always helps. If Dumble made 5 different 183s, each will sound slighly different anyway. Shads could come out sounding a little worse, or maybe even a little better, cant tell yet. In any case, almost all of your clips sound excellent, and very similar. Thats a lot because of the digitizing process. The other is that your playing is so strong.
One thing thats really cool is that I just happened to have a killer sounding Dumble pretty much land in my lap, (sheer luck!) and now a bunch of different people have heard and actually got to play it as well. I was lucky it happened when it did, because there is no possible way I could afford it now, and I thank the new owner for helping me out of a very difficult $$ position that forced me to sell it so fast. You also offered some help at that time which I will always appreciate.
