Hi all,
Only few of around perhaps 300 Dumble amps seem still to be used these days by professional recording artists. When doing some research for the "Dumble reference thread" I noticed that always the same few current users come to mind. One reason may be of course, that most of the original Dumble amps now reside in living rooms or bank vaults. But another reason could perhaps be that their users are not as well known to the public as Santana or Robben Ford.
So it would be great if some of you could perhaps add some more names to the list and could perhaps even post what details you know (bluesmaster, skyline HRM, transition generation etc.) and for what records and tracks these amps have been used?
Perhaps someone knows as an example for which productions the rental Dumble amps of Ultra Sound Rehearsal have been used?
And because being a great and inspired musician AFAIK is not always the same as being famous and well known to the public, perhaps adding some more names to the "Dumble users list" would perhaps introduce all of us to some "new" great players and music, too.
So if you know of an original Dumble amp that has been or is still used for studio and/or live recordings, it would be great if you could perhaps post what you know in the "The Dumble video / sound clip reference" thread.
BTW: For all researches concerning "who plays on what track or record" this for an example is a fine instrument: http://www.discogs.com/

" The psychics on my bench is the same as Dumble'"
Shameless promotion....
Robben Ford played Stratocaster and his Dumble-fied blackface Deluxe on this track on one of my sister's CD's. Not a scratch build but, I believe Dumble was known to be inside this amp. Just a supporting R&B rhythm track. Buy it if you dig it.

Re: Original Dumble amps on record
An average music listener has heard of Santana, Miles, Steely Dan,Slash, Hendrix, Even John Mayer. But well know in Guitar circles is different from this.Ever heard of Miles Davis?
In Australia Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Bill Frisell, Eric Johnson, Mark Ribot would be lucky to fill 1000 seat venues, guitar geek audience. The acts they have played for would be a different case.
I don't see the same Audience numbers at a Robben Ford gig that I do a Santana show. I saw a clinic of his and he lamented that fact.
I was being provocative, as these guys are great musicians and guitar players. But the thing that breaks artists to the general public is not technical skill or a dumble amp, but songs and musicianship.
Re: Original Dumble amps on record
Hi all,
obviously I did not succeed to communicate what I would like to ask for. Please excuse my obviously misleading use of "not as well known to the public as Santana or Robben Ford", that I have meant in the sense of "not as well known to most of us Dumble aficionados here at ampgarage as Santana or Robben Ford" and not in the sense of "not as well known to most of the inhabitants of this planet". So please let me try it again:
If someone asks a Dumble aficionado anywhere on this planet which recording artists use a Dumble amp, most probably more or less the same 10 up to perhaps 20 players will be named:
Santana, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Danny Kortchmar, SRV, Jackson Browne, Steve Farris, Brian Wilson, Carlos Rios, Sonny Landreth, John Mayer, Steve Lukather, Rick Vito, Todd Sharp, Lowell George, Ben Harper etc.
But as we know (or perhaps only assume as it is always told like this) Alexander Dumble did build his perhaps 300 amps usually for professional musicians. So my question was and still is:
Are some of the other 200+ amps who are not on our usual "Dumble players list" perhaps on some records or live videos, too? And if so, does someone here perhaps know for what track of what record one of these other 200+ Dumble amps has been used for?
As I obviously did not succeed to communicate what I would like to ask for in my opening post, here now some examples for what I am talking about.
Every Dumble aficionado in London, Helsinki, Paris, New York, Bratislava and Kyoto will know Larry Carlton. But I am rather sure that many Dumble aficionados did never hear the name Charly Bonat as one who uses Dumble amps for most of his recordings since more then twenty years (the next record for which he used a Dumble ODS will be published this month btw). And I am rather sure that the name Karl Ratzer is not on the "usual lists", too. And I must admit that I did completely forget that Colin James reportedly played a SSS on some of his records. So thanks a lot for this reminder, nickm57. And I don’t think that most of the Dumble aficionados have Rene Toledo on their personal list as a Dumble user (ODS skyline HRM).
Having said all this, now again my question:
I know of course that some on the "usual list" have more than one Dumble amp. But even then at least 200+ must have been built for - or perhaps now are used by - players like Charly Bonat, Karl Ratzer, Rene Toledo and Colin James who up to now probably are not on "the list" of most of us Dumble aficionados. And perhaps some of these 200+ amps are on records, too, as (at least reportedly) Alexander Dumble did not build that often amps for guitar hobbyists?
So if you should perhaps know of a Charly Bonat, a Karl Ratzer or a Rene Toledo, that up to now is not on "the usual list" and you perhaps even know, what kind of Dumble amp she/he uses and perhaps even on what track of what record, and if for the solo or the rhythm track etc., it would be great if you could perhaps post a clip or a video or a link to YouTube, Amazon, MTV, MySpace etc. in the "Dumble reference thread". And the more details you could find out about the amp, cabinet and perhaps guitar of "your" Karl Ratzer or Charly Bonat, and post them in the reference thread, the better of course.
All the best,
Max
