Texas Blues amp

Post by txbluesboy »

I,ve been working on my version of a non-hrm ODS mated with sort of an SSS two channel amp. Check out the sound clips here http://www.longhornamps.com/ and give me your opinions. Thanks Terry

It would be cool to hear some lead playing threw it/in the vein of SRV etc., other than that it sounds good.

Yes , I know. My playing is laughable so I'm relying on my friends to do the clips. Jess did some nice cleanish stuff for me which is all I have to put up so far. My friend Bill is on vacation in Colorado right now, as soon as he gets back I'll put up some SRV style lead stuff. EDIT: However, now that I think of it SRV played for Bowie a some point didn't he? So there is some precedent. :D

What speakers are in the cab? What did you do with the filters? (Is it your own idea or something that influenced you?)

The speakers are Celestion 90's. The EQ is set straight up,and the high filter is set on #1 of 11 settings (not off but the lowest setting) low filter is off.

That kind of amp would be awesome, I'll be working on some clean, non master amp, reverb based on classic Fenders, power stage - 6L6GC, standard I could say.

I just studied all the posts and put together parts and pieces from here and there until I came up with something that sounded good to me.

Are the Filters inductor based like on the SSS?

Very nice! I have always respected your vision and followthrough in combining/tweaking various sections of known amps and making it your own. Great stuff!

BTW: SRV's "breakthrough" was with Bowie on the Let's Dance album. You can really...really recognize it China Girl. SRV tone/feel all the way!

No inductors, all RC networks. I'm not convinced the real SSS had inductors, but I too have heard this opinion. Do you know it from first hand knowledge?

txbluesboy,

Not 1st hand but I have heard from a few guys that have had a peak in a few. Eric Johnson's (Santana now) amp has Induc. filters . I believe 1 - 4 have them, maybe even more?

The High Plains Drifter (SSS) Funk makes has them too I believe.

He makes serveral different kinds, E J's, John Mayers, SRV's. All of which are different, all SSS made are different to my knowledge. The 1st few were 100w 6L6 based, the rest after 4 or 5 ( I think? ) were all 150w w/ 6550's. If you do a search in the Gear page Funk lists some options he offers, maybe that will give you a better Idea of the SSS.

Don't quote me on all this but most of this is speculation from a few very knowledgeable bunch of folks. Very interesting amp none the less , definitely a Unicorn.

I was in contact with a guy that bought a SSS owned by one of Tom Petty's back line guitar players but he hasn't got back to me yet.

Your amp is quite interesting although, a little bit of this, a little bit of that, I dig it! :D

Very cool amp. I have to get myself in gear and build one of these. Great tones and very interesting features.
