My Old VOX Speaker Cabinet

Post by Structo »

I've mentioned before that I have a VOX 212 extension cabinet.
Today I pulled the old cab out of the bone pile and installed my EVM 12L Classic's in it.

The cab is quite a bit bigger than the Lopoline cab I was using.
Very strongly made using 3/4" voidless plywood.
The EVM's sound better in this cab.

I've had it forever. Bought the cab in the early 70's for $35. The Vox speakers in it were pretty blown when I got it.
Like a bone head, I threw them away because I didn't know they could be reconed.
It came with the chrome roller trolley that an amp head would sit on.
That's up in the attic somewhere....
I believe mine is the Buckingham from 1965.

This cab also has a 6.5" x 3.5" horn made by Goodmans, the 15 ohm Midax.

I pulled that out because I think it was rattling.

This old cab is built well, 3/4" voidless plywood.
This website is the only place I found a bunch of pictures.

Some of the cabs I saw there had oval ports in the back sort of like the Dumble cabs so maybe that is where he got the idea.

Here is that horn that was in it. I wonder if it is worth anything?
There is a oil filled cap can for a cross over in the cab.

Anyway, I'm glad to be able to put the old cab back into service. :D
I was bored........

That's odd, I was in a music store just this afternoon that had that head/cabinet. But it was a solid state amp (so they said, I didn't check it myself).

I thought it was a Beatles combo from about '68 or so, but on reflection they had moved beyond that by then.

You gotta make a talk box out of that thing.

Yeah I had thought about that but wanted to see if it was worth anything first.

I was surprised at the number of different style back panels they made.
Some were like mine while others had oval ports ala Dumble.
And of course some were sealed back panels.

The way mine is, it will be easy to experiment with a different shape opening.

The screw holes for the back panel have metal inserts in them, so all the back screws are machine metal screws.
I think they are all brass too.

Most of you probably can't tell but Vox always left a vertical piece of wood in the baffle over the speaker about 1 1/2" wide .
Not sure why they did that but one of mine got broken so I removed both of them.
Strange the baffle board seems to be particle board while the rest is high quality plywood.

This is exactly what mine looked like with the stand.
You can swivel the speaker up or down.
Box is 33 x 22 x 11"
They call this one the big box AC-50 speaker enclosure.
Basically it looks like an AC-30 without the amp.
My VOX logo does not have the strike through, it is individual letters.

Here's an oval backed cab.

I like those old vox cabs, I've had my eye on a royal guardsman for a while that I'd like to convert into a T-wreck.

I had a Viscount in the 60s, sealed back and it blew speakers every other week. I think the SS power amp was at fault. I got to where I;d carry an extra speaker in the car, Radio Shaft junk but everything blew in that amp so I didn't care.

Cool cab. How about building a Dumble into the head cab for a real sleeper 8)
