OT: Silent recording your "Dumble" with a Torpedo

Post by dogears »

So the Two Notes guys were kind enough to send me a demo Torpedo after I met with them at NAMM. Thanks to Andrew at Diffusion Audio for the hookup. The Torpedo is a two space load box with full IR simulation of cabs/mics/speakers. Tweakable for mic postions and phase.

I received the unit last week. I was kind of buried here (no joke-blizzard!) and did not get a chance to mess with it until today. Within 5 minutes of plugging it in, I recorded my first sample. Now I must mention that I am going for my usual hornlike tone. I have no interest in getting classic rock tones. So, caveat emptor.... I am trying to get my solo tone without bothering the family. The unit did feel good as I monitored on my ADAM P11s. Not exactly silent, but not loud. I like the ease of tweaking and the software and USB worked perfectly.

On this clip I used the Carruthers CSA, on bridge hum, into Fuchs 30 (Skyline non HRM, cathod ebiased) into the Torpedo. Torpedo was set to R121 mic and 2X12G cab. I ran the analog out from the Torpedo into my Millenia Audio mic pre. I think I messed up the impedence. I went into the mic input. I probably should have tried the variable impedence line in. It was a bit dark.

I have a BNC cable coming tomorrow so I can go direct into the RME Fireface with SPDIF.

I had to add 2-3db of presence on the solo to get it to cut, probably could have EQed better. A little delay and verb added in mix. Still kind of dark. I think I can tweak the models to get more bite.

I was happy with the performance so here it is!

Here is a clip I just did micing my 2X12 G1265 cab. I used the Glaswerks since it was on top already. Same basic circuit as the Fuchs in the Torpedo clip. Huge difference in brightness.

The core of your tone seems to be there. I agree it needs more bite. There is also this high-end "hash" on the tone that needs to go away. It's like some fuzz riding on top of the notes - maybe it's just me, but I don't like it.

Still, again, the core of Lerner-tone is there. Excellent for 5 minutes experimentation.

For a second there Scott, I thought you had one of my Torpedo amps

These guys were right across from the both where I had my Torpedo 50 stationed and I did get to hear them throughout the show. Very cool unit, but I think most all speaker sims have artifacts (usually in the highs). With that said, I think it sounds pretty good for a sim.

Interesting.
Looks like around $2,600 in the USA made in France?

Sounds pretty good Scott, a little dark like you said.
I'm sure you will be able to tweak that better.

I think that capturing the feel of an amp/ speaker and guitar together is one of the major hurdles to be solved for these types of simulators.
You don't get the same feel from the speakers interacting with your guitar.

I had pretty good luck with the Line 6 POD XTL pedal board for this purpose.
I'm sure the Torpedo is leaps and bounds ahead of that unit.

Of course the POD now one of the earlier generations of these types of simulators or modelers.
The POD had a bit of an issue with a certain amount of fizziness early on but careful EQing and selection could overcome that if you were patient.
It got labeled as a POS early on.

I think for most guitarists this type of gear has a hard time convincing them that they can leave their amps and speakers at home.
Although I did just that when I played at a church.
I would just grab my POD and guitar and plug straight into the board.
Worked quite well for that.

But I only paid $450 for the POD XTL.

Don't let that smoke out!

Speaking of the pod... This is pretty funny.. Here is an attempt and I do mean attempt at a Dumble tone with the first version pod..Jeff Beck Strat.. Don't laugh too hard it's about 10 years old.. Now back to real tone,,,

Thanks for listening guys. Here is a clip I just did without the Torpedo.

Hi Scott,
have you been trying to tweak this thing some more...

For that price I would rather stick with traditional method. It seems a lot cheaper and better.

Here is a new try from this morning. Getting much better I think!

I too do like the traditional method, but this intrigues me....

From this evening, another one

Yes, this sounds better...

This device definitely opens a lot of new possibilities but at the moment it is to expensive... at least for an average guy like me.

I listened to the later one, and yes, that is much better indeed.
