I'm gonna try a Larry Carlton style live rig
I was wondering if anyone else has tried this and would like to get your thoughts. I have 2 powered speakers (JBL Eon 15) and have just hooked up my small mixer and fx unit (TC G Major). If you have not seen the carlton rig check out his web site. My first impressions of the wet/dry/wet rig with 15 minutes on this thing is that I think the dry (only) signal from the amp will help cut through in my large funk band. I am going to play with it a bunch today and see what kind of sounds I can get. Maybe someone here can share their experience.

Andy Fuchs had an interesting rig at the amp show the past 2 years, you might want to contact him for more details. He took the out from the loop into a stereo effects unit and out of the effect into a small SS amp and pair of guitar speakers. It sounded huge.

That sounds cool. I will have to check it out.
One of the things I am diggin' is the ability to easily have quick control via a fader of how "wet the overall sound is". I currently have my presets on my G major and don't move them at all venue to venue but with this set up I can more readily tune to a room. Another cool thing is when you want you can check out the sound of the mic'ed dry signal on stage to see what you are sending to the front of house (Usually there will be only fx in the JBL's). One drawback of course is the amount of gear I will be taking just doubled.

Do you really need a small PA for your Delay and Reverb, which is only around 10% of your total signal?tonejunkie wrote:That sounds cool. I will have to check it out.

You might consider bringing a small cheap transistor combo (or two) for the effect signal for smaller jobs. Maybe the weight saving makes up for the reduction.
If you are below 30 year, just ignore my comment.

I'd buy a 16 watt stereo (tube) hifi amp kit to use for my effects, they can be bought for under $300bluesfendermanblues wrote:Do you really need a small PA for your Delay and Reverb, which is only around 10% of your total signal?tonejunkie wrote:That sounds cool. I will have to check it out.

I agree this rig is big! I am going to try it without purchasing any more gear (just what I have on hand, the JBL's and 1204 mackie). The bands I am in already have a larger PA. I can always use my usual 80's ODS head, dumbleator, and 2x12 cab w/ G1265's that I have used for almost 3 years now when I want to carry the usual amount of gear. I just wanted to see why Larry uses the rig he does. Also I hope this non circuit oriented thread is OK in this part of the forum. I thought that I might get someone with some experience with this.
Re: I'm gonna try a Larry Carlton style live rig
I'm looking at something like that for my next build. In the old days I ran a stereo set-up (dry out digital delay to boss CE-1 chorus ensemble) that went to my two 40 watt combo's with EV's and the delay signal went to a 50 watt hiwatt half stack in the middle with no chorus or reverb. I would set the delay for single repeat with a few miliseconds, big huge sound, talk about a football field of marshmallows...worked well for a power trio where I was the only guitar.
Next build I'm looking at a 124 style pre-amp into built-in d-lator II into G-major into stereo power amps (~35 watt PP 7591). The big idea was to use the built-in midi switching in the G-major to switch OD and PAB. I would just go plain old stereo.
In a big funk band, I don't know if a "bigger" sound is the best thing, not to mention the headaches sound men will give you when you show up with such a rig. Maybe some tilt-back legs or a second cabinet would help you hear yourself better. What kind of amp are you using?

Eric Johnson is also using a couple of JBL's and a mixer for his effects. Steve Lukathers setups is also along that route....dry signal + 1 or two wet channels.tonejunkie wrote:I agree this rig is big! IMLE it much to much hassle to drag all that gear along. However, I only use 3 kinds or Delay from a TC Nova delay, so a loop is fine for me. Also I play in a 4 piece band with two guitars, so I try to keep it simple and not too overwhelmig.

I mentioned to our sound man that I was thinking of doing a rig like this... I got this...ER wrote:....not to mention the headaches sound men will give you when you show up with such a rig.

I say go for it, if you have the room for that footprint on stage and the stremph to haul it. I use a rig like this all the time time but, usually just the one effects satellite. They are Tech21 power engines and those 3 cabs are all the same size. The blonde cab & head have been replaced by a small RedPlate combo. In the amp, out the tube buffer to the time based effects on the pedal board, back to one or two of the Tech21s. Amp is dry - effects only out to the powered cab/cabs. Tech21s have XLR outs to send to PA - no mics necessary.

Nice setup.
Can you describe what all you have in your rack?
I like how the rack is slanted back.
Not familiar with the Tech 21 stuff. So these are SS power amps?

The rack is just home recording stuff - no guitar gear. Interfaces, mixers and rack synths. If you want the detail - PM me.

Stelligan,
That set up looks great. I was wondering what you notice about using this setup live compared to a conventional set up where wet and dry signals are mixed in the same cab.
Thanks
Brook

Best thing about the setup for me is: No coloration of the basic amp's tone. All the effects I tried in the loop mucked with the tone a bit. Likely a result of cheap digital conversion. The other thing I like about it is the 3D listening environment. The effects coming from a slightly different location adds a nice spaciousness to the sound. I have been experimenting with an Xotic X-blender in the loop and that is a nice alternative. It makes the loop parallel in a way and doesn't mess as much with the tone. The detractor is the no 3D thing.

Re: I'm gonna try a Larry Carlton style live rig
I used to do that with my Boogie and mic'd it into my Fender Acoustasonic (nice acoustic amplifier with built in effects and 2x8 plus tweeter). I did that for a long time and got some really good sounds plus added reverb to my amp. It was a simple version of the same kind of thing.
I remember taking it that rig to a jam session one time and there was a player there not familiar with either the Boogie or the Acoustasonic. He asked me where he could get one of those killer Fenders.
This rig ... with a mic on the Boogie's 1x12 EVM12L. It did kill and a strange combo but it worked really well.
