Clips to compare OD, OD/PAB, and cleans on Skyline 80s

Post by dogears »

Hey guys,

Here are four clips of the Glaswerks Deluxe Overdrive comparing voices. Amp is 80s Skyline, high plate load, big bright cap on master. OD channel, OD with PAB, Clean, and Clean with Carruthers CSA guitar neck tapped/bridge hum. All others are bridge hum.

All clips are running with the rack interfaced in loop. Bludo Loopalator, TC 2290, Eventide Eclipse in parallel, and Sound Sculpture Switchblade for routing. A touch of Waves IR in mix. No EQing at all. I close miced with both an SM57 and a Royer R121 ribbbon. The Royer is blended in at about -7db. Most of tone is SM57 with the Royer adding a little warmth. I miced one of the Celestion G1265 speakers in my Jenkins 2X12.

Clip 1 - Clean channel http://scottlernermusic.com/SOD/ScottWe ... ltiMic.mp3

Clip 2 - Clean channel with pickup tapped http://scottlernermusic.com/SOD/ScottWe ... ltiMic.mp3

Clip 3 - OD channel http://scottlernermusic.com/SOD/ScottWe ... ltiMic.mp3

Clip 4 - OD channel with PAB engaged http://scottlernermusic.com/SOD/ScottWe ... ltiMic.mp3

Btw, the strings were quite dead on the guitar. Need to change them!

Any feedback welcome..... Thanks!

Nice Scott! :D

I was wondering how loud is your amp when recording these clips?

Nice playing and a beautiful sound.

Clip 1 intrigues me because it's on the clean channel and yet it has aspects of the OD sound in there - sustain & 'strain'.

What were the gain settings used?

The clean channel with tapped pickup sounds more like I would expect from a clean channel.

Hi Scott,

Love them all, but I really dig your first clean(with dirt) clip.
Do you think your closer, with this mic setup, to what you're hearing in real life?
Thanks for posting; it's making my life easier to choose a good mic with this type of amp.

Damn they sound smooth!!! Nice to have hands to match!

Here are some more without good hands (Me) LOL
Same setup as above with a little changes upfront.

Using my City Limits : http://www.scottlernermusic.com/pinner/ ... CLMult.mp3
Using Scott's Carruthers: http://www.scottlernermusic.com/pinner/ ... AMult1.mp3
Messing with my tele: http://www.scottlernermusic.com/pinner/ ... eWerks.mp3

And thanks again Scott!!! This amp sounds ridiculous in person!!!!!! It was SO responsive, it took a bit to adjust. Incredible. Just listen to the bloom into feedback, it was spiritual LOL!!

+1 They are all really nice and smooth, but this (#1) is one of the sounds I'd like to have out of my OD. I mean, being able to foot switch between perfectly clean and a sound much like this for OD. Guess I need to start a thread to solicit ideas for tweeks.

Scott,

Very nice and I like how the PAB is just a beautiful extension of the OD.

Well Done!

Great tones Scott!

I'm also intrigued about the first clip, was the input vol real high? Gives a Scofield vibe to the ODS, I haven't had much success trying to achieve that myself. I'd love to know what's going on there!

Cheers,

Paul.

PS. pinner, I can't get your clips to play. Anyone else having any difficulties? Edit- started working on my machine! Loved the tones!

Thanks guys!!! The amp was at moderate gig level. I was about 8 feet away from it. Clean gain was at 11 oclock with a 30% taper pot. Amp has a bit off breakup if you hit it with a hum and the gain there.....

Thanks again for listening. I will do another now with more gain and a mono guitar mix to set it in the middle more.

Yep. Gary has that amp buttoned up nicely.

Great playing overall. I agree that the first clip with the "hairy" clean was just sweet. Clean (mostly) but with harmonics and the urge to sing. The PAB, as stated, is a great "extension" of the OD tone.

The amp is smooth to a fault.

Great pick attack. It often sounded like you were kinda sliding the pick edge on your attack - or using the angled blunt edge of the pick rather than the pointy edge. Very Robben-esque!
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

Thanks!

I was trying to get more bass splat and recorded these two before leaving for work. I did not dick around much. Mostly SM57 and I miced the Glaswerks box with the 1265. Unfortunately, I forgot to switch the impedence selector from 4 to 8. The Jenkins is wired for 4 and this box is 8. Whoops.... Lost some top as a result. More after work I guess. id id up the bass control and input gain to get more bass barf.

Here is a clip of Scott I really like using my tele. Gives it a little different timbre which fits well with the backing.
