I have run into a used one and in good working condition. The seller is telling me its worth $200. Alnico, 100 watts, discontinued, etc. Is he blowing smoke? Thanks for any input.

Sounds high for used. IIRC most of those 100W Alnico Fanes were around $250 new. I bought a Studio 12L, Fane's EV12L competitor, about 4 years ago for $189. That was a special introductory deal though.

I had a blue 12" Fane AXA 100w a few years back that I had to return because of awful cone cry. Are we talking about these?

Gee, I dunno. This one is doped so I doubt it. Was your's doped and did they make it optional: doped/no-dope? OR are you saying that these speakers all had cone cry? I'm pretty naive regarding Fane speakers, alnico or ceramic.

Fane did have problems with conecry on some of their speakers some years ago. So did Eminence for that matter.

Alright, thanks guys. The seller has let me try the speaker. It sounds good but - at least compared to my alnico Weber Silver Bell - it breaks up pretty quick. This surprises me because the Weber is a 50 watt speaker and the Fane is 100 watts. But it doesn't quit so it must be what it is. I can see it for recording or bedroom but I need a little more headroom for live play. Still, it is a different voice that I kinda like.
As to the doping on this speaker, I do see something other than the typical Weber or Celestion doping. Here, the dope is right up to the edge of the cone face as it slopes down to the dust cap - where the other brands will overlap this edge and run it down onto the face of the cone edge for at least 1/2", maybe 3/4". I personally think that cone cry occurs in this 1/2 to 3/4" area so I can see that the cone cry idea you present could be valid. Hm. I do wonder if doping it in the more traditional manner would change the early breakup character.....
Thanks for all the input. A last comment, in regards to Eminence making speakers with cone cry? Haha, they seem like the Dope-Kings to me. Man, they really put it on these days so you must be referring to another period? Well I appreciate this info.
