Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
Hi, I want some suggestion on a speaker for a small open back combo that I am building. I am looking for Marshall Plexi sound.
So far, I have WGS G12C/S which is American sounding, WGS Veteran 30 that is similar to Celestion Vintage 30, Celestion G12T-75 and Eminence Legend 1275.
I like the veteran 30 best, I like the G12C/S also, but it is a little hawkish sounding ( honk sounding!!!). Celestion G12T-75 is ok, but I feel it is not open sounding as the first two. It sounds restricted. I don't like the Eminence 1275 at all.
I am looking for a speaker that is minimum 60W, more open sounding but different from the two WGS that I like.
thanks

Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
I would try a pair of g10 greenbacks in a combo. A little added complexity, vintage plexi tone, and 60 watts with a pair. Something the size of a super of vibrolux.
Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
I like the WGS Veteran 30 in my 50w JCM800 2204 combo's.
Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
thanks for the reply. My cabinet is 1X12, so I am stuck with a 12"
Yes, I like the Veteran 30 I just bought, I am looking for one that is a little different but still with open and big sounding.
Thanks

Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
I know you didn't like the Legend, but the Eminence Swamp Thang is my favorite speaker in a open or ported 1x12.
Look around and you'll see other opinions on this speaker, but to me it has just the right brightness and a huge but not sloppy bass response. (Gawd, I hate trying to describe sounds)

Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
The Celestion creamback 60 or the G1265 would be a nice choice. The Alnico Gold would also be good but expensive...
Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
Anyone family with WGS ET65 and ET90? ET65 is supposed to be similar to Celection Creamback or G1265. ET90 is supposed to be the higher power version of ET65 with a little more mids.
I want to also say, The Celestion G12T-75 has the tonal balance that I can like, BUT it just sounded constricted ( I don't know how to describe it better, it's like in the tube or something). If it is more open, I can like it.
Thanks

Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
Well I have run my amps through Dumble 212 with WGS ET-65's, another Dumble 212 with EVM12L, and 212 with Eminence Swamp Thang and Red, White & Blue. Sound full and great.
Mostly use a 412 with English Vintage 30's for AFD #39 100w amp and 50w JCM800 head.
I do have WGS G12C/S 75 and British Lead 80 in several non Marshall combo's but no time or energy to test all possible combinations.
I did enjoy a 212 slant with Scumback H75-16HP-LHDC speakers. But I think these need fixing sound weird all of a sudden.

I have the WGS G12C/S, it sound similar to the British Lead in one of the WGS demo. Do they sound similar in real live?M Fowler wrote:Well I have run my amps through Dumble 212 with WGS ET-65's, another Dumble 212 with EVM12L, and 212 with Eminence Swamp Thang and Red, White & Blue. The best I like so far is the WGS Veteran 30 that is supposed to be similar to the Vintage 30.
I just interested to buy another 12" that is different from these two. Preferably from WGS as they offer refund or exchange AND I have good luck with them so far.
Thanks
Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
I used the WGS G12C/S in a Fender combo so I don't really know.
I like both the Veteran 30 and Retro 30 = Vintage 30 sound.
I also enjoy mojotone british speakers they are made with high quality components compared to the failing Celestion Vintage 30's made in China.
I collected enough Ipswich Celestion Vintage 30's to complete my 412. Next will be 412 with 25w green backs.

Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
Is Retro 30 different enough from Veteran 30 to worth having both?M Fowler wrote:I used the WGS G12C/S in a Fender combo so I don't really know.

Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
Mark, is there a quality problem with the Chinese made Celestion speakers?
I have a 12H30 Anniversary speaker which is made in China that seems okay, though I did buy it some years ago.
There are a few different makers of Celestion style speakers, I don't know what to make of Scumback or WGS. The price of the WGS stuff is hard to go past.

Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
I am trying very hard to buy WGS because it is the only brand that you can return, exchange or refund. Speaker is so hard to judge until you listen to it yourself. I don't want to get stuck with a speaker I don't like. The Eminence Legend is one example. The good price is an extra benefit.Mark wrote:Mark, is there a quality problem with the Chinese made Celestion speakers?

So far, I like two out of two with WGS.
Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
The Eminence is a good speaker but it is better suited to Fender amps in my opinion. Speakers are a bit of a hassle in that you can be perfectly happy with your speakers until they don't compare to something else. I had this very experience this weekend.
I've never heard or tried a Warehouse speaker so I can't say either way.

Re: Speaker suggestion for a Marshall combo build
I am not knocking Eminence in general, the specific one I have is the Legend 1275. It really attenuate frequency above 3KHz that gives the sound I don't like. I got it because it's supposed to be copy of the Famous Jensen C12N. I have it in my 74 SF Pro Reverb and I still don't like it. Another Eminence I have is from a Fender Rock Pro cabinet that I verified with Eminence people by the serial number it's Legend GB128, that one actually sounds ok.Mark wrote:The Eminence is a good speaker but it is better suited to Fender amps in my opinion. I have to say I am happy with the two WGS I have particularly the Veteran 30.
