Fender speakers (Oxford 12L6)

Can any one shed some light on these?
I'm looking to make a 2X12 cab for my redplate blackverb based off of the dumble 2X12 cab plans available in the d-files forum.

Seller claims they are 1968 vintage, and that one has been re-coned recently.

How do you like your Redplate Blackverb? I had Henry build me one years ago and recently sold mine. Good amp but I want a MagicDustDual.

i've only just got it. it was built for some one else and i got it used from them for about half price

so far i'm really digging it, i get great bluesy tones on the clean channel, and then get to come close to those clapton "from the cradle- mr Johnson" tones using the tweed setting.. the amp loves my strat.

I need to get a 2X12 or a 3 or 4X10 cab though..

Hence the post regarding the speakers.

New speakers are mental expensive here in New Zealand, and these have have been on our version of ebay for a while, so i'm curious what the deal is..?

If they are anything like the 12" Oxford that came in my old Deluxe Reverb, they suck for Dumble tone. I haven't heard them in a proper D-style cabinet, though.

I liked the WGS retro 30 my redplate came with. The Veteran 30 is nice as well.

The blackverb isn't really a dumble.
Its more a black face fender with a dumble style cascading OD..
The OD channel is a little less "saturated" - for want of a better description - than the D-Style amps i have spent time with.

Its more a black face fender with a dumble style cascading OD..
The OD channel is a little less "saturated" - for want of a better description - than the D-Style amps i have spent time with.

I agree it sounds more like a Dlite then a ODS very Fendery and has reverb loop, effects loop and OD loop.

Mine had 6 way rotary switch to change between Fender styles, Twin, Super, and Max different caps switched in.

Mine also has the rotary switch. The "Tweed" setting is to die for
Its a great amp. I wasn't actually shopping for am amp, but this one came up and i managed to sell a couple of other things to be able to snag it..
Now i just need some speakers.

Well may some Celestion G12-65's or WGS ET-65.

Or EVM12L or WGS 12L

Those powerful speakers sound great but sometimes I like to with lower wattage speakers and let them work a little to get some tone. For 6L6 or EL34 amps I still prefer Celestion Vintage 30 or WGS Retro 30 or WGS Veteran 30, or Mojotone 30. You can mix two different speakers up in a 2x12 for even greater coverage.

The OP stated he is in New Zealand and that those Oxford speakers, most certainly pulled from a Twin or similar are what's available.
Suggesting WGS, Celestion,EV or Eminence is fine, but hardly practical.

That said, those Oxfords aren't horrible either, they were good enough for Fender at least and lots of good songs must have been played live and recorded with them.

I'd say, if not expensive, give them a try.

Could definitely do much worse, such as getting some PA speakers, Chinese cr*p, whatever.

I live in Argentina, with many similar constraints, so I'm painfully aware of that reality.

The speakers sold before i could grab them

Ouch.

I've sold many through the years.

Twin owners upgrade and leave old original ones behind.

I make a cabinet and quickly sell them.

In fact, there are better but they are quite usable.
