Latest project 4x10 with African mahogany and zebra wood trim. So far finish sanded to 220, slurry sanded [320 & 400] and two coats of oil. It will have two 10" golds and 2 10" greens. Both of these woods were PITA to work with. Both wanted to squirm around but finished very nicely. I have already picked up some spalted mahogany and some walnut that would not let me walk away for the next unknown project.

That came out very nice.

How is the trim held on? Just glued edge to edge, or is it half lapped, dowels, biscuits?

Hi John,

Glued using Titebond II. This is the fifth cab I've only glued the trim on - no issues.

I goofed on the baffle supports [pine to the mahogany] and tried to whack them out with a mallet. No go - I have done this before and found I broke the wood and not the joint. On a high stress joint I would use biscuits but that is probably overkill as well.

Nice job Russ,Love the African Mahogany.We have a molding Co. not to far from my house in Pa.He has his own place in Africa and he farms his own trees.to say the guy uses a lot of mahogany.He has a scrap shelf in the building for us woodchucks.Most of the cutoffs are 1.5 thick by up to 18 in wide and a few ft long.Some of that wood has almost blond streaking going on.I think its above Cherry an great to work with.Your work is beautiful!!!

Thank you. Having a nearby pile of pretty wood to root through would be a problem to have - if you could keep ahead of the continuously growing stash of future projects filling the shop.

Every one of these is an experiment/leap of faith with and a lesson[s] in fixing the F'ups. The zebra wood surprised me with how well it worked with the mahogany.

Low power sounds good. Sunday will get the full power test - can't wait.

Is the oil a "final" finish or do you plan to lacquer or coat with something else in the end?

That is beautiful. I'm about to route a pine 2x10 before I decide on a finish.

I have done several experiments with finishes on wood - guitars and gun stocks mostly. I keep coming back to oil [boiled linseed/mineral spirits] because I manage to ding the surface and oil allows for easier fixes rather than total refinish.
