So I picked up a pair of 16ohm Celestion G12-65's yesterday, well worn with some home-grown repairs: spider and dustcaps re-glued with silicone, but really cheap. I've been wanting to hear some as the D-cloners seem to love them. I figgured I could get my money back around here if I didn't like 'em. I loaded one in one of my 1x12" cabs and gave a listen. I don't like it with my Tele. It sounded promising with humbukers. I'm gonna give it more time, but hmmmm... Then, about 30 minutes into my testing, at reasonable volume, I smelled it: voice coil smokin'. I'm betting the voice coil got stuck. Damn. So now I have one 16ohm G12-65. I had hoped to put them in one of my 2x12" cabs if I liked 'em.
So now I need a recone. I looked around the interweb and found prices at about $70 plus shipping both ways. You guys got any preferred re-coners. I've used Speaker Exhange in Tampa, and Freeman-Tuell in Dallas in the past. I had high hopes....Now I have depression...

That's a bummer man. I've had several speakers arrive over the years with coil rub. One EV I bought someone shipped across the country in a priority mail flat rate box and the frame was so smashed it was sticking out the side If the box! You are not alone. I stopped buying used speakers two years ago

I have a GB needs a recone. The place in Florida is the most reasonable I have found.
Sucks being us. Mine was eaten by a friend who borrowed my amp and blew the speaker but continued playing the amp with a missing speaker til it blew up the amp. Nice!!

took three years to get it back. I thought he was still playing it.

I'm kinda embarrassed as Jim is a re-coner (Scumback). Sorry Jim. I bet your recones are the best, but they aren't cheap. I have a JBL G125 and a Celestion G12-85K that I'd like to get fixed, also. Yes, I'm a Speaker Hoarder...
I've been playing the '65 and I'm starting to like it a whole bunch more. I was stuck on my Vintage 30, but the '65 shows things that the V30 was "homongenizing", if that term makes sense. Now I really want to get the other one fixed...The torture never stops!

If you find a reasonable recone shop for your G125 - let me know

The G12-65 version that consistently gets the best reviews is the one with the fiberglass voice coil former. Totally different highs, IMO. I don't think the original fiberglass former is available at this time.
I like the original EV SROs for the same reason...fiberglass.
Someone should make those two formers in fiberglass. They'd be doing us tone junkies a huge favor.

This guy does nice recons, I've bought speakers of him on ebay.
He's not any cheaper, but he does offer hemp as well as standard recone.
