Bargain Speakers

Post by cbass »

Anyone found any cool old speakers that sound good?

I had an Alnico rola out of an Organ from '72 It sounded Awesome Right until it blew.Very loud and great break up.Had a whizzer that I cut off.

I cut the dust cap off and I tried to fix the voice coil rub I was able to reduce it a little but thats it.
The voice coil gap is extremely tight.Maybe thats why it was so effiecient.

I want to try to recone it.

My absolute favorite was a 12" Cinaudagraph Alinco from a ca1946 Aireon jukebox.
Very much like a '50s-'60s guitar speaker.
I eventually blew it up playing through the 2x6L6 jb amp which I still have.

Unfortunately at the time (early '70s) I didn't have an understanding of reconing and so reluctantly tossed the basket.
It would have made an ideal candidate for a recone.

I later learned the art of reconing and worked in a MI shop with a recone bench. Live and learn !

Had some duds too.Had a couple of heppeners that were awful. Ineffecient and dull. They were ribbed cone heard the smooth cone ones sound better for guitar. They have bigger mags and voice coil than the rola

I got a couple of old Rola's out of a Hammond organ. A 12 " smooth cone and a 12 " ribbed both with 1 1/2 " coils . Side by side in a 2 x 12 with stuffing they take every watt of an express with no hesitation. I play a komet 60 through em down a bit lower and get compliments about the sound of my guitar all the time :?

Old organ speakers are great ( shhhhh) . The Rolas are awesome, Cleveland, I actually have a pair of Heppners in a Thiel 2x12 cab and they sound great, a little dark and inefficient which is why it is one of my shop test speakers. Most of them are only good for 20w or so. People who hear that cab with the heppners always ask what is in it, they like em.

Organ speakers? Hmm... LOL.

I have some myself. I got an old Celestion Silver Vox Bulldog alnico out of a Hammond organ some time ago thru eBay. Great speakers.

Here is the auction number for a Rola out of a Hammond for 20 bucks. The cone is ribbed for your listening pleasure.

here is a better link. this appears to be just like the one I have.
