Maybe Vox was First

Post by Structo »

I saw this when I was researching Vox history.

It is the solid state Buckingham which is a amp and cab version of the Viscount combo amp.

What I noticed was the oval speaker cutout in the back.

Hmmmm, seems like this idea was floated way back in 1965.

Beatles in Melbourne

Post by Structo »

Check out this 1964 Beatle concert in Melbourne.
Better gear and stage than the earlier US tour.

Some opening acts with Johnny Devlin, Johnny Chester, and Sounds Incorporated.

If that is the whole concert, they didn't play very long at all.

Also notice they used to use XLR connectors for the speaker connections....

Hi Tom,

DC 64 is one of their longer Concerts, they ran overtime. The Beatles didn't play longer than 30 minutes maximum when touring. I don't think I could have withstood the screams that have been compared to standing next to a Jet engine for half that time. (During the filming of Hard Days Night, the onstage sound man recording for the film had his hearing permanently damaged by screams during the climatic concert at the Old Scala Theatre (demolished in 1969, for a housing project).

My sister was at the Cow Palace Aug 1965. My Mom, Dad, and I waited outside across the street parked at a closed Gas station. A PA speaker was live, I could only hear the Guitars, no voices, Bass, or drums. Since, I knew every song by heart (my sister played her LPs constantly), no doubt as to who was playing. When I told my sister and her friend about this she said, I heard more of the Beatles than she did.

Best regards,

Steve

I'm restoring this amp model right now for my friend Dale. XLR speaker connector yes and he didn't bring it with him

Just taking the chassis out of the cab is a chore. :)

Nothing new under the sun, but now the oval is done for supposed sonics and tuned port silliness where I'll bet you lunch Vox did it purely for looks and gave sonics not a second thought. And this stuff was the CA Thomas built stuff too not sure what input Denny had.

I once had a minty Super Berkely Reverb. Built ptp like a cheap radio inside but it was absolutely killer sounding and beautiful to have in the house. Should have never sold it for $400! Thanks for reminding me.

I don't buy much into tuned ports for geetar, granted make it real small or real big and you'll notice something. Speaker parameters and calculations for ports are only valid w/o distortion, so what's that for a guitar set up, the first one watt? A hole about 1/3 the size will do ya' IME. Exceptions: the Altec Thiele Boxes but only for clean PA based speakers like the EVs and Altecs. And Hiwatts don't sound right unless they have their orig ported cabs, but I have no idea if the mojo's in the Fanes or the port. And the B15, but bass amps aren't geetar amps. Admittedly, I've always wanted to try the THD cab with the narrow port in back, but meh. Anyone spend a lot of time on ports?

Me either. See all that crap in front of the Marshall on the right? Oof

There is an AC50, AC100, and 12 or so of the WTF is that? transistor models. I like the buzzy lil combos. Best worst amp in the World.

Yeah. Ok. On the right, Bigfoot. In front of that, Sasquatch, a UFO, "Thee" Boogie Man, the unified field equations, a free-energy generator, a Bible signed by the author, and a flying car kit.

Look at it cross eyed - sharpens the image right up.

Well there's clones and other builders that make a similar sized chassis that fit the cases, especially of the AC-30 variety. And since AC-30s are mounted on a plinth board, you can interchange between head and combo cabinet by simply removing the back panel and speaker connection. Options sell cases. Because sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.
