So, GK's clone walks into a bar... (clip content, 4 songs)
I recently put together a new band just for fun called "GK's Revenge". We do a couple of my instrumentals but it's basically a bar cover band. For this I've been exclusively using my pair of Express clones I put together OF my original '89 Express amp. We needed some new clips for our myspace page and did a "board tape" @ last weekend's gig...
Folks had asked for more clips of the clones so here you go. No guitar volume knob turning on this one, just a straight rocker cranked up.
Stage was REALLY small at this gig so it's "just" a 1x12, albiet with a bit of low end EQed in at the board. 2003 Gibson Historic LP standard, stock burstbucker pickups.
Thanks! GK

Wow Glen! I think even Rev. Billy would dig that tone.

If I'm not loosing my mide "Back in the day" Ken Fischer said Billy had a wreck at one point, borrowed or otherwise. Maybe he still has it?leleduke wrote:BFG needs a wreck.kec wrote:Wow Glen! I think even Rev. Billy would dig that tone.

It was Ken's personal Express, Sarah, named after his grandmother, that he lent Billy to try out and Billy talked him into letting him buy it because a new one was going to be 'different' and it had to be this one. That was from the interview with Ken in Dave Hunter's book.
It's now in Ultrasound's collection and is an '87 according to them.
I'd love to know if it ever made it onto any ZZ Top records.

Glenn,
Sounds fantastic! If you don't mind sharing, I'm curious about a couple things:
a.) Did you use a power attenuator and if so what kind?
b.) What schematic did you base your clone on?
c.) Which output x-former did you use?
d.) What was the EQ curve you added on the low end, because it smoked.
Thanks and keep them coming,
Robbie

Used a THD hotplate on -4 on most of the clips overall, but on Tush you can hear me click it off to bump up the volume on the last solo...
b.) What schematic did you base your clone on?
Matches my original, which as far as I know is the same as Francesca except for the bright switch wiring which has been discussed. Yes I used the full bright (500pf cap) position in these clips, plus two 18' cords.
c.) Which output x-former did you use?
Original spec Pacific PT & OT
d.) What was the EQ curve you added on the low end, because it smoked.
Can't remember exactly and EQ is put away in storage until next weekend's gig. A fairly good boost in the 60-100 hz area, a little boost near 4k, and rolling off over that a little. Sennheiser e906 mic.
Thanks! GK

Re: So, GK's clone walks into a bar... (clip content, 4 songs)
I just posted 3 more songs, plus replaced the 1st one with a slight remix.
SO, now 4 songs are on the myspace page.
By the way I was running two 1x12 cabs, but miking just one. One cab was next to the bass player as a monitor so he could hear me, and one right next to me. Both are sealed cabs and the one you are specifically hearing has an original '72 era G12M 25 in it. It's a Mesa thiele port cab that I blocked off the ports, and added about 4 layers of felt in front of the speaker to simulate the darker tones one typically get's with a basketweave cab using the same speakers. The cab has limited low end as it's so small. However miked it works well and with it sealed it seems more flat in response and easier to EQ in extra lows without getting too much of a peak at the cab's natural resonance point. Once EQed it almost has that 4x12 thumb, at least from the mics perspective. It's still pretty small sounding on stage though so when you play you have to imagine it out front.

Re: So, GK's clone walks into a bar... (clip content, 4 songs)
I drop the little E down to D, so the top 4 strings are effectively in open G.
My guess is the original version is an overdub with Pearly all in open G.
Folks if you want something different for a wreck listen to the old school "Country" clip the 3rd one down. Almost all clean with a Les Paul which means backed way down, but the guitar get's dimed by the last solo and the amps cranked just the same as the Tush clip.

That’s the best tone on the planet. Glen, did you use the clone with the sozo electrolytic? Great hands also.
