All else equal the 5200 will be a little louder, a little brighter and a bit more aggressive with EL34's.

Why louder? It will develop more power through higher impedence. I'd say more agressive earlier quicker breakup but not by a huge amount.tubedogsmith wrote:All else equal the 5200 will be a little louder, a little brighter and a bit more aggressive with EL34's.

I have not replaced transformers in the same amp , but I have used the 5200 , 6600 and 6600 vintage spec trannys from toneslut in various amps I have built based on the express. I have no problem with the 5200 OT , I actually quite like it. The 6600 is good too, and works great for 6v6 powered amps. I am having a few questions about the 6600 Vintage spec'd OT though. I am finding the mids pushed more and the low end is recessed. I am not sure I like the balance of tone.
The Mids on the Vintage spec'd OT are very good though. I find the overdrive character to be very Rock sounding, agressive, not as smooth as the either of the earlier OT's . It must be the laminations/core material. I know this all flys in the face of what is supposed to be. Perhaps I have voiced my builds to the prior core material and simply need to rethink some components. like speakers, caps, etc.
I am going to replace the OT with the M27 steel version and see for certain if it is the OT core or something else about this latest build I am not satisfied with.
So far the Toneslut Express OT , 6600 ohm, with M27 steel is my favorite, Smooth, Great low end , sweet mids, good top. The new M19/27 sounds grainey less low end( still good) agressive in a good way for Rock sounds.
disclaimer, I have never heard a real express , and I don't try to clone them .

I installed a switch so that I can go back and forth. To me it sounds best on 5200 with that aggressive edge.

Re: 5200 ohm or 6600 ohm what's the difference soundwise?
Just so folks know I measured the original Pacific OT in my '89 Express and verified it is 6.6k. If a 5.2k Express is brighter and more agressive that would probably be going in the wrong direction for me. I find mine to have plenty in that department already.
For what it's worth when I compared my Express to a 5.2k Ceriatone the Ceriatone was louder with 6V6s than my Express is with EL34s! Yes there is more to the picture than the OT but it was striking how much louder that amp was than my original.

But has anyone compared the Ceriatone clone against a clone with Toneslut transformers volume wise? I have all-Ceriatone clone myself. I would like to play my clone on full power even with 6V6's but all I can do is play it in triode mode cause the pentode operation with 6V6 get too loud for almost any place I'm able to play. Do the PT voltages match? Ceriatone page does not specify the PT voltages. But then again I have'nt had too many opportunities to play it through some greenbacks, all the jamrooms have speakers with V30's or 75's.

nik's voltages seem to be good. with 235v into the 220v secondary I get a b+ around 430v

Sounds like you need a VVR to tame the beast a bit.iwo wrote:But has anyone compared the Ceriatone clone against a clone with Toneslut transformers volume wise? I have all-Ceriatone clone myself.
