New Head Cab for Express

Post by rawnster »

Just finished the cherry drawer version for my newly built express. Jeez, my level of admiration has raised tremendously for cabinet makers and finish experts. This was no easy task...especially getting the stain and gloss finish right. Oh well, it's done; and it came decent enough. Feels great to have the cab completed and the chassis installed. Brings closure to the entire process. :-)

Thanks Tubetwang. The more I play it, the more I'm liking it quite a bit. I know this is off topic with the thread, but, I've just want to mention that I've found a great combination of tubes with this amp. In dealing with the hiss issue, I stumbled on a non-conventional combo:

V1: EH12AY7
V2: JJ ECC81 Gold Pin - 12AT7
V3: Ei 12AX7
PTs: EH 6v6s
biased around 30mA

This gives me loads of clean headroom...well at least enough to play clean at a fairly decent volume before much breakup kicks in. And the best of it is the lack of hiss. There is hiss, but it's really throttled down quite a bit. I know the amp wasn't designed with these tubes in mind, but dang, it sounds good to me. Now to get a proper cab and speakers to match. These G12H30s are a little too hi-fi sounding.

I'll try to record a few clips if I can get my studio gear unpacked and setup.

I don't think you are on your own when it comes to using different tubes. Ultimately, its your amp and so it needs to sounds good to your ears. If that is the sweetspot for you and the design can cope with the different tubes, case closed.

The cab looks great.

Thanks. The look of the cab makes the whole thing a type of "oxymoron". The cab says, "look at me, I'm pretty". But the amp's aggressive behavior says, "shut-up or I"ll rip your face off."

:-)

Ok, I thought it was funny. Been a long day work!

I agree totally.... putting the drawer cabinet together itself is dead easy..... but doing the gloss poly finish is NOT.... Next one is going to use something easier, perhaps a wiped on poly finish or a polished wax finish. Brushed on Poly just is a pain- it's too easy to get drips, etc...
