My head cab in progress, opinions? (Finally finished!)

Post by JoeyE »

This is for the 2W wreckless amp i recently built. It will be sanded smooth and edgess will be rounded just like the TW cab. The facia wood seen beside the cab is curved that i found at a hardware store instead of the slightly angled TW since i dont have any powertools and everything was cut by a hand saw thus the finger joints are as wide as the wood i used. I am still undecided with the finish wether glossy or natural using just oil.

I want to know if i'm the only one who think it looks ok. Honest opinions pls what do you think?

Looks cool to me. I like glossy myself, but either should be fine.

I love the look. And I think the curved front will be very cool. if this were me, I would go with a slight darkeing of the natural wood - maybe oil and then satin poly. Don't forget to show us the final results.

You can test stain and clear coat on an inconspicuous area on the inside. Or on the scrap. I would want at least the top two corners rounded over. I think it will look very cool. 8)
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

I think i will stain it a littlle darker and finish it glossy. I also plan to do roundovers just like a TW cab. I still need to borrow or find a router to do it. I just cant justify buying a router to do a 5 minute job then have it collect dust.

I got a router and did the roundovers. Still more sanding to be done. I also made a hole on top as a handle. A friend of mine said lastnight it looks like a "Crate", i said no it does not! He ment it literally looks like a crate. LOL

Ill post more pictures when finishing is done.

Thanks.

I did a test stain on the scraps of the wood types used. Using dark stain all the wood looks like a single piece plank because the stains make them look alike. :( I dont know how to make it all slightly darker but still retain the color tone separation. Any sugestions?

Maybe you should skip the stain and go straight to the poly.

Measure out some of the stain and cut it half and half wtih mineral spirits. Brush on and wipe off after a few seconds. If that's not light enough, cut with more solvent. To get it darker, let it sit longer before wiping it off.

Heres a picture where i put things together temporarily. It still needs sanding and rounding of the corners more. Im still undecided about gluing the black front plate because there may be some better idea and I cant turm back.

The top-front looks pretty dark and out of sync to me. (So much easier to say when it's not my project! ) Is the inside of the front panel still unstained? Wipe it with mineral spirits to see what it would look like clear coated.

The sides I would consider amber shellac to bring it towards the bottom front and an unstained top-front panel. Then clear. If it needs more color, light maple-colored stain before the clear.

Youre right black wood seems off, I will use light color wood and now i need it cut to 7.5 - 9 degrees angle which is no way i will cut by hand.
Anyone in Modesto, CA have powertools help a tooless guy? LOL

After repeatedly convincing my better half the importance of macho power tools i got a finishing sander and wow what a difference, it is soo smooth and seamless gluejoints in just a few mins. Looks so much better now than the picture above.
