Hi Everyone... 1st Post here... Liverpool question

Post by Plague »

A friend made me a Liverpool. All I really know is it has no Grid Blocker and No Choke. Has a bunch of old Hammond tubes and sounds AMAZING.

I have heard before that using pedals with any sort of trainwreck circuit either does not work well or should not be done.

Is it safe to use overdrive, delay, and wah pedals with this amp? I have already been using them only on some solo's. Most of the time I'm using no pedals at all.

Here is an small clip with the effects on for the solo as an example...

Thanks for your time!

IIRC, Ken Fischer's comments on effects loops and why he didn't use them included the point that the front end is designed to take pedal-level effects well. I think most who are playing a Liverpool or Express will prefer to forgo effects and use the volume knob to control their distortion and overdrive levels. (Rockets don't go as far past 11, so some may accept a little help.) And some people just feel less compelled to use effects. But I think any idea of a "thou shalt not" is a bit off base.

I agree with that. I think I mostly hear "does not like XXXX pedal" rather than "though shall not".

I played with my Red Witch Medusa chorus/trem and it was fun as hell. With a dynamic amp like the Express, it made the Trem in the pedal sound even more "from the amp" than this fantastic pedal already does.

Pedals are just difficult with these amps because the gain is so high.

Most pedals become REALLY noisy when run with a Trainwreck or any amp with that kind of gain that isn't switchable to turn it down on the fly. To me keeping the amp way down and using boost or overdrive pedals is missing the whole point of these amps. Also some buffered pedals will mess with the impedance the amp sees, effecting the control you would normally get from the guitar potentiometers in a bad way. There just are better amps for that purpose. Still pedals are worth a try and can't hurt you never know until you try it. I've swapped 12AY7s into V1 and V2 of my Express and played a country gig with a pedal board and a wireless.

If I am to run ambient or modulation effects, they work really nicely using a wet/dry rig to put them "post amplifier".

I was at Ken's house one day and I tried out one of his Rockets with Ken's old red Fuzz Face. Now THAT was nice!

I use a wah and a delay in my Liverpool and they work just fine. I leave all my overdrive stuff at home, though - the volume control does that bit :D

Teese wah, Phase 90, Boss Rev/Delay, Boss chorus all seem to be fine with my Express. Funny how I don't use my VooDoo Labs Sparkle Drive much anymore :?
