Whats minimum safe speaker power rating for express

Post by declan »

Im trying to work out if a pair of 25w greenbacks would safely handle a cranked Express, been reading reports of 80 & 100w amps blowing greenbacks in a 4X12 config so very interested in opinions

thats what i feared, i just like the idea of a 2X12 for practical reasons and there seems agreement that the G12m greenback is the best speaker for the express.

So something has got to give and i would prefer it does not end in a blown speaker

considered scumbacks but the shipping to europe makes the price just insane

Also, consider the type of enclosure. I have found that a closed box can handle higher levels than an open back cabinet with the same speakers.

I would personally not be afraid to use a sealed or even a ported 2x12 cab with a pair of 25 watt green backs. Even though I currently use a Scumback 30 watt w 55hz cone and a eminence redfang in a front ported cab. It sounds huge and sweet with a Wreck style amp. I also use a 12" 30w 55hz weber with a 10" 25w silver dog, and a 8" blue pup. very small rear port ,Very sweet cab.

Another friend brought over his original Marshall 2x12 w greenbacks from 1972. I did not seem bothered at all with a fully cranked wreck. It was a sealed cab.

I would be leary of using an open back cab with any of those speakers though.

Scumback Greenback clones in 65 watt configuration would probably solve all your worries.

what about a detuned cab... closed back but with a damn big hole in the front, not sure if that falls under the term ported, certiantly not a tuned port anyway :D

I think a detuned cabinet behaves more like an open back cab. I woud opt for a least a speaker or speakers rated for 100 w combined. I think it also has something to do with the suspension of the speaker to handle the excursions of an open back cab and lack of the compression of air inside a sealed or tuned box. Which acts like a shock absorber so to speak. The wattage rating has more to do with the heat disapation of the voicecoil. You should probably consult an expert like Ted Weber or Jim the Scumback guy.
