I tried to look in the search feature but couldn't find it...
has anyone tried building, or built, a liverpool type amp but with either 4 or 2 6v6's (cathode bias)?
cheers and a happy new year

Wouldn't that just be an Express? (unless it was 4 x 6v6)

as far as I can tell the express is a fixed bias amp, and when I'm talking 2x6V6's... I mean something around 12 watts, cathode biased, with a 8000 ohm primary and a small 15w OT. So no, that wouldn't be an express in any way.
And the same goes for the 4x6v6 possibility.

Re: liverpool with 6v6's?
I don't see why not. It should work pretty well if you just change the cathode bias resistors to 250 or 270 ohm instead of 130 ohm. (Of course, you need Octal sockets.)riscado wrote:I tried to look in the search feature but couldn't find it...

I've got two sets of iron ready for this very project. I'm gonna try both fixed and self bias though.riscado wrote:I tried to look in the search feature but couldn't find it...

Re: liverpool with 6v6's?
I built something very similar to that with some tweed deluxe iron I had, although it used a top boost- type preamp. It sounded pretty cool.

Re: liverpool with 6v6's?
I haven't seen many amps with two 6v6 in push pull with lower voltages, towards class A. If you are going for lower wattage out of two 6v6. Most amps of that kind, including wreck have plate voltage around 400 volts, this could be a sweet point for 6v6's in push pull. I will also try something like wreck preamp into a power amp with switchable EL84 and 6v6 push pull configuration, working at something like 320 plate voltage. So we'll see how that works.

I think the Liverpool values all around would work pretty well, except you might want to change the tail resistor in the PI to around 10K like the Express. 6V6s want to be driven harder than EL84s.
My personal sweetspot with 6V6s is around the 360-370V on the plates with a 250ohm Rk. I think that the edginess found around 400V is a bit brittle to my ears.
