parallel load box

Post by dayn »

I have read many people use their attenuator, set to any load, in the second input of their K*met amplifiers to basically 1/2 the watts and lower the volume.

Does this work on TWs?

I have a Liverpool clone and want to build a parallel load box, instead of a full attenuator, for taming the volume a bit.

Anybody have a schematic for a small little box that could be left plugged in and on all the time, rather than a full attenuator with different stages? I don't want to attenuate, just provide a parallel load.

That, or maybe some kind of resistor at the second speaker jack inside the chassis?

I'd avoid putting a dummy load inside the amp because of the heat it will throw off. What I've done is simply bolt a high wattage 16 ohm power resistor inside a small aluminum box, using heat sink goop under the resistor. Drill a hole for a 2-conductor jack, connect the jack tip to one resistor terminal, the jack sleeve to the other resistor terminal, and there you go. Connect the box to the amp's second speaker jack with speaker cable. Use velcro on the "cool side" of the aluminum box to fix it to the top inside of the head case so it doesn't dangle around - there's your permanent solution.

Don't forget, reducing the power output by half produces a *just detectable* change in volume. IME you really need to reduce the power by 6-8db to get a usable change in volume.

Thanks for the solution I will give it a try.

I understand that it will only give a slight drop in noticeable volume. That paired with a 1/2 power switch (2xel-84), into a single 10" 95 db greenback, and with a ppimv (not sure I will use it), that should give me about 6-8 db drop. It should be good for getting the volume down but still enjoying the tone and feel of the amp.

Has anyone considered/used a London Power scaling plan with a TW type design? Just curious.
TIA,
