I am beginning my Express trainwreck and am using an extra JTM45 chassis. I am modeling my layout after the pics of Paul Ruby's chassis except that I plan to build mine using a tube rectifier.
My question is:
Do I need 80uf rectification at stage 1 when not using ss rectifiers? If not, do you agree that something like 40uf or 50uf be suitable for filtering the ripple from a tube rectifier?
Thanks in advance. I have been studying this site for some time and started my build last weekend.

Hi!
Tube rectifiers have a maximum capacitive load. It's around 50 uF for a single GZ34 for example.
Sound/feel of amp will change. CLC filtering yields less hum w. given Cs.
Again: sound will change.
If this is your first TW, I'd recommend staying close to original layouts and schematic.

Thanks for the reply. This is my first TW but not my first build. I appreciate your advice to stay traditional, but since I already have the parts and like tweaking, I am forging ahead.
What I understand from your reply is that there are limited (if any) benefits from using filter values greater than 50uf when filtering a GZ34. I take that to mean that my gut feel that 40uf (maybe even 32uf) is an acceptable value to use as a starting place, subject to tweaking.
My research on this site tells me that a JTM style layout works if you use a good ground/layout approach. The approach I use seems to be consistent with the approach outlined in posts by Paul Ruby, who I understand is experienced in building TW's in a marshall style chassis. I'll let you know how it turmns out.
