Complete 360 on EXPRESS

Post by andresound »

It's been 2 years since I built my EXPRESS. Being the inquisitive type and always looking to improve, I tried tons of "mods" to this circuit. Lowering gain , changing PI entrance, different cold clipper values, grid stoppers, snubber etc.... The bottom line is..... I have come full circle and the amp is back to stock!!!! Ken got it right!!! ALso this amp is NOT bright once you have 300+ hours on it, it mellows considerably.

The Genius of KEN FISHER!! What a legend

I agree and, yes, my path was pretty similar. 8)

My experience kinda looks similar but I am sorta convinced that part of the cycle was me learning how to use the Express. I had a long history of only using two positions for the volume control on my guitar and then hitting the pickup selector switch as the ultimate option. It took me a while just to get use to dialing the volume control in more subtle increments. Once I was familiar with the Express behavior I was able to get more sound and variation out of it. It's still not the ultimate amp for me when I want a big clean sound but I have figured out how to use it for just about any gig... although some sort of attenuator is usually essential.
