Aluminum chassis

Post by krakatoa1313 »

Could anyone direct me where to get 17"x8"x2" aluminum blank chassis. I have looked around a bit but, have had not much luck in a source.
Thanks,
Clark

Not to steer you away from rj's fine products, but Watts Tube Audio has just added that Trainwreck size (17 X 8 X 2) to their line up in the "blank chassis, inward lip, project box" section...

I figure competition is good for all of us... it helps me keep on the ball in providing stuff that is useful and affordable for the DIY amp builder community. If it turns out to be a really sweet product at a really sweet price maybe I'll source mine from them??

When I saw your note I ordered one so I could look it over for myself. About $62 delivered for a blank chassis so it's not cheap.

At first glance it's decent with .090 thick aluminum (alloy not specified) and has mounting inserts installed - hopefully at the same centers as the rest of us just to make things easier on the various cabinet builders. I also noticed that the corners aren't welded... we'll see how it looks otherwise when it gets here.

Hey RJ,
I mostly mentioned Watts for the "blank" chassis option. You know how much we all enjoy drilling chassis (joke).

As for the corners, I bought some Alumiweld rods at Harbor Freight and used that to "weld" corners. All you need is a garden variety propane torch for heat. There is a bit of a learning curve to get the feel, but the result were A+. I could not break apart the test pieces.

I'm in the same boat. I looked at your site, RJ, but didn't see a blank chassis. So I ordered the blank Rocket chassis from Watts a couple of days ago (for a client's build). I'll let you know my impressions when it arrives. But I've used Watts' blank chassis many times, and have always been pleased.

Shipping has gone up. Total was $77.80 shipped USPS Priority--this includes the bottom panel and a set of screws.

Shipping prices are insane these days. Not likely to ever get better.

hmmm.... fuel prices are down and have been for a long time. That might imply that the expensive part isn't the moving of packages but rather the the manpower required and administrative elements of the companies... but with today's automated technology you might expect that freight companies are more efficient than ever by using computers and robots and stuff... you don't suppose they are just making more profit rather than pass along some savings to us?

Eh, I hate to see the mention of Watts when RJ is a member here and has supported the community so well. Good on RJ for such a courteous response. 8)

I recognize rj's contributions and importance on this site as much as the next guy. He's one of the deities here.
Clark specifically asked for "BLANK" chassis, which rj doesn't offer (on his website at least).

I've used both RJ's and Watt's chassis. They are both really good. We are very fortunate to have these options available! If you can, go with RJ and get some boards or transformers while you're at it.

Watts chassis are a strong build, brushed aluminum metal. Id prefer a shiny chassis myself. I do like how they fold the fronts and backs over the sides (unlike MOJO) that adds a lot of strength from warping bending in. My mojo warped in!

Why cant any one match the thickness of a original Bud? The low mass chassis and tiny terminals have to have some effect on tone?

I am meeting with a new chassis manufacturer tomorrow. I'll ask him about those. the common belief is that these are .050 thick and made from 1100 series aluminum... that is what I'll ask him about unless someone can let me know if you know differently.
