Initial Liverpool power up. Help needed.

Post by vincenz »

Hi
I just finished a Rj's PCB Liverpool, but I have some problems to power it up properly.

1. Bulb limiter, no tubes: AC power OK, heaters OK, PT secondaries OK, all B+ OK.
2. I double checked all the connections, the layout, etc... All seems to be fine.
3. Bulb limiter, tubes installed : asa I switch standby to ON, the V5 lights very bright (!!) and the bulb limiter as well. Therefore I switched OFF immediatly before the explosion

Any troubleshooting start point will be very appreciated
THANKS
:D :D

Sounds like you have a short or wiring error. "V5 is very bright" means the filament is bright? Sometimes this is just because the tip of the filament is sticking out of the cathode tube a bit farther than usual. Check your wiring carefully. If you don't see anything, I suggest powering up with no tubes and the bulb limiter connected, check standby "on" does not cause the bulb to glow brightly. Then switch standby off, then install one tube at a time and briefly switch standby "on" to see which one causes the high current draw. Since nothing went up in smoke when you first discovered this (thanks to the bulb limiter) it should be pretty safe to do. Are you sure that you don't have a shorted tube? Very nice looking build, BTW!

Thanks Martin, you are right, one of the EL84 is defect. I just tried with another tubes set and it works ! :D
