Which speaker for TW Rocket clone?

Post by hans-jörg »

Hello,,
short question:
which speaker you recommend for a tight Rocket clone. early sweet breakup appreciated.
Wattage? Alnico/Ceramic/Ferrit? Celestion, WGS, Eminence? Maybe a 30 Watt one (I´m oversized with the speaker (lowest has 65 Watt)?
For a small wallet!

At the moment works there a WGS ET65 (to much mids). Needed a earlyer brakeup from speaker.

Thank you in advance

AlNiCos are the go to magnets for these amps. I don't think you can go wrong with a pair of Cele Blues. I use an ASW Elegante 1x12 with my Rocket thing and I dig. You should try to find a used pair of Blues in a 2x12. 2x12s pair very well with this circuit. If you want a 1x12, maybe a Gold?

I use a Blue in my 15 watt 2XEL84, and a Vin 30 in the 4XEL84 with verb. I like Vin 30s for lots of stuff.

2 x EVM12L or 1 Celestion Gold + 1 Celestion Blue

I seem to recall posting something about speakers for the Rocket. Basically the Celestion Blues are the ticket. I haven't seen many shootouts with Blue, it would be good to hear the WGS Black & Blue, as well as the Scumnico PVC, I'm not sure how the Tone Tubby's fare or other speakers.

Hi Hans-Jörg,
You said you were looking for something with earlier break-up, easy on the wallet, and that the WGS ET65 had too much mids?
I've found that on a budget, WGS are the best....but you're in a tough spot still, because the ET65 has the least mids of their models...I found that their 30-watt "Reaper" was a good sounding speaker with "open" midrange...not the 55hz version, that is VERY dark....have you had a chance to check out their ToneChart? Speaker searching is tough financially, but when you find the right ones, it's worth it!

FWIW, I've done a TON of experimenting with speakers with my Rocket, and a pair of Celestion Blues really is an amazingly great sound....especially running two 8ohm versions @ 16ohms like an AC30.
Didn't dig the Golds, just found them kind of dry and uninteresting, but many other guys love them...
I think that the Scumback Alnico's sounded really good, especially if you find The Blues to be lacking on the low end freq's. His S75's are less bright than Blues, and the Scumnico's another notch darker....both have big bass response, and I find that my Rocket has almost too much low end already.
I'd love to try some ASW alnico's some time, but the search ended after the Cel. Blues, they are friggin' goosebump-givers with the Rocket for me, clean and overdriven...

Thank you all for your replies and help.
I have the WGS black&blue inmind too.
Principaly what wattage fits best for 4 EL84? A 40Watt Speaker?
I have built my daughter a 1x12" Cab and therefore I need 1 Speaker only.
If more power is asked - I built her 2 of them (1x12") :)

Thank you all - you are Pro`s

Kind Regard

Is the WGS 65 the same as the speaker used in the two-rock cabs? If so then those are great speakers. They are kind of scooped in the mids but in a good way. I really like them.

Speakers are one area where I DO have a lot of experience, especially with the Rocket, and will do my best to try to help with sharing what I've found...
I am screaming busy with work and finishing house projects before the cold weather here sets in (the wife is all over me! ) but will get back as soon as I can...

I too would love to try a set of WGS Black and Blues, but like I said elsewhere, after having the chance to borrow a Celestion Blue, I pulled the trigger on a set of those, knew it wasn't a gamble...it seems like the average WGS customer is looking to spend under $100.

There just aren't many reviews on the WGS B&B's....I know that Brian Wampler has raved about them, and that the ToneQuest Report gave them a great review, but I take all magazine reviews with a grain of salt...

I really wish that WGS would take the time to get a really good guitar player with good amps, and take the time to re-do all of their soundclips...they are shockingly bad sounding, and I wonder if they might scare a lot of potential customers away...even on their YouTube videos, the guy representing and doing them seems like a sweet guy, but "ouch"...I don't think I would have checked out the WGS line if I didn't get to try a few in person first.

FWIW, I have found that the WGS ToneChart on their site is pretty accurate when comparing their different models with each other.

Rockets sound better with alnico and H type speakers. Ideal would be a mix of both, maybe a 2x12 with an old silver bell and a G12H-30 003 cone would be fabulous but normally 2 blues for low speaker headroom or 1 gold would work.
Weber makes great speakers inspired in those models so maybe an alnico blue dog 8 ohms with a legacy H specs 8 ohms in series for 16 ohms would work wonders!!
G12M types sound great too but it gives it a little marshally sound, in the JTM vibe.

I never use drivers in series (series - parallel is okay), because if one driver fails there is no load on the output transformer.
