Keith Urban Tour
This is a longshot, but if anyone is planning on coming to the current Keith Urban Tour, I'll be using my express and rocket builds with the opener, Dustin Lynch. I'd love to hear some feedback on the tone if anyone is in the crowd. I can bring you a beer, too!
For those who care, Keith is using an old Fender Twin Tweed and a real Dumble ODS. They sound pretty spectacular.

Re: Keith Urban Tour
Awesome you got a very cool opening gig there! Wish I could find something more on that level... I couldn't help notice the similar curly cherry cab look of your amps and the pair of Express clones I built a few years back. Mine have since darkened up a bit and now look just about the same shade as my originals. That said, what wireless are you running with your amps? GK

Glen, those are gorgeous! I really want to hear them. As for wireless, I'm using the Shure UHF-R system. It's not cheap, but I'm extremely impressed/happy with it.geetarpicker wrote:Awesome you got a very cool opening gig there! Wish I could find something more on that level... Re: Keith Urban Tour
Thank you! (Note: I replaced the pic...)
Thanks for the tip on the Shure UHF setup. I love running a wireless with my Express amps, at least with my clones I often use live. It's obviously liberating to be able to go from clean to mean from the guitar, but's it's on yet another level to do that from anywhere on the stage even with some tonal sacrifices. My Sennheiser G2 is ok and the amp can still be "worked" from the guitar, but I'd love to eventually pick up a high end unit. I bet the noise floor improvements over a low/mid level unit are incredible.
Very impressive you built your Express as your first build ever, it's not an easy one to start with by a long mile. I read where you put the extra .002 cap after the 2nd stage for more lows. Ken long ago had me do that with my Liverpool I had at the time and it helped to fill it out. That said, just today I added a .002 ceramic to one of my clones and it really helps to fatten it up, and low end wise it makes it more comprable in an A/B comparsion with my originals. Still I ponder how Ken got plenty of lows with most of his Express amps (and even more on the Stancor models) without the extra cap. Heck with my '85 I don't even use the 2 cord trick any more it's so smooth and fat.
Will you have any shows as Keith's opener nearby?

Re: Keith Urban Tour
I did do the parallel bass cab mod, but I think they are both the same type. If I remember right(on Kelly?) one was PVC and the other is ceramic.
The wireless really is killer. Another thing that helped my pedals function better is using the XLR out of the wireless into a Radial ReAmper box, which converts the signal back to hi impedance. The 1/4" outputs are usually low impedance. Mine is a 200 ohm output.
As of right now, our closest show is Louisville I believe. We may be adding a show in Nashville at some point on the tour.... Most likely Bridgestone if it happens.

Info on one of Strato17's Express plus good info for getting some bass to your Express plus Ingrid mods.

Should be a little chart here somewhere that tells the frequency cap and resistor values.
Glen, in that pic of your amps, I see some old TVs you collect those?

I noticed the same stuff! Nice collection you got there and seemingly in great condition too. On the right looks like a Philco Predicta.Richie wrote:Should be a little chart here somewhere that tells the frequency cap and resistor values.

Yep old TVs. That said I just started a new thread, I'm derailing this one too much... Cheers, GK

I've been wondering about running wireless - I never have.geetarpicker wrote:I love running a wireless with my Express amps...

Glenn - Do you find the Express to be much brighter when running wireless? Do you need to add the capacitance to the front end of the amp to compensate for capacitance you usually gain from your "2 cord trick"?
Noise: Is there any difference in noise when using single coil pickups (Strats, Teles, or P90s)?
Thanks.

Re: Keith Urban Tour
My Sennheiser has a variable parameter in the transmitter to set a cable emulation, which is basically a slight high end roll off that simulates the cord quite well. I can make it as bright as a short cable, or even darker than x2 Mogami 18 footers.
I think most single coils hum to about the same degree. In my main strat I've been running a Suhr hum cancelling back plate for a few years now. In regards to my Sennheiser wireless unit I sometimes go to the trouble to change the input level on the body pack when I go from a single coil guitar to a humbucker, but not always. Noise wise the wireless has some self generated hiss, but it's seems no more no less with different pickups/guitars IF you tweak the intput gain to maximize the signal to noise ratio.
Chris may have more in this department from his experience with his very nice Shure UHF unit, but I'm guessing it also has similar features and probably more.
