Donor amp ideas, suggestions

Post by tubetek »

Greetings All-
Long time lurker wading in...
I have a UNIVOX 1061b Bass head; originally used 4x6L6GC at over
600VDC on the plates (voltage doubler supply)
The PT specs:
250-0-250 HV (MASSIVE, probably better'n half an amp!)
6.3-0 at 4A
3.15-0-3.15 @ 2A
OT specs:
3.3kCT Primary
2,4,8 ohm secondary (also MASSIVE; bass amp)
The chassis is roomy and the controls are in the right direction to
use the Express/Liverpool board/Layout
With SS recto, I should be gettin' about 350VDC idle.
My thought is to use the Express values and wire for 2 or 4x 6V6
and use the proper OT taps to put 6.6k (or 3.3k) as required.
Make sense? Am I missing anything?
Thanks in advance for any and all help/critique.

Do a search "Univox" or "Uniwreck", I believe somebody in this forum converted a Univox to a Wreck.

Good luck

I wouldn't really call it a conversion, but I did use a Univox U-1086 as a donor for my TrainWreck build, and I dubbed the result the "UniWreck". I really just gutted the chassis compeltely, cleaned/sanded/repainted it, and then reused only mechanical parts like tube sockets, switches, lamp, etc. The trannies were not appropriate, so I used Mooses trannies (glad I did), and I of course built an all new circuit board set. You can see some pics here:

As you will see, I decided to keep the Univox look in general (I have a matching Univox 2x12 cab also).

Good luck with your build. By the way, I have since had a name plate made for her. It is patterned after the Univox plate visible on the front of the head, but it says UNIWRECK instead.
