New GK video up with '85 & '89 Trainwreck Express...

Post by geetarpicker »

New video up with two different eras of original KF built Express amps. It's a long one (18 minutes+) but I wanted to give a good taste of both amps with both the LP & Strat. Hope you all like it!

Glen,

That is a great video and shows to me that why you wanted that 85 Express.

Both amps are fantastic but I favor the 85 on both guitars.

Glen, I am sure KF is smiling at this moment. Your music, great playing and championing would have made him very proud and happy I am sure if he was still with us. Thank you very much for sharing with us. Looking forward to your new CD. All the best

Yep both sound fantastic. The 85 sounds full on its own so guessing the 89 might cut through a mix a bit more. Great job on the video, thanks for posting.

Glen any comments on what tubes are in these amps? Have you by any chance tried swapping sets between the amps to see if the '89 amps tube set makes the '85 more aggressive?

Great videos with excellent audio and great melodic chops. What do you think the transformer specs are on the 85 ? lower primary impedance? different core material ? both.

Higher primary resistance in the older amp, 6.6k vs. 5.2k I believe. Core materials are probably the same or a similar grade of grain-aligned steel (M5/M6).

FWIW my Express uses a real 3801 and is more like Glen's' '85 than his '89.

Both, Stancor and Pacific, have the same primary impedance of 6.6k. and actually the Pacific is a copy of the Stancor so is probably age of the windings or some other manufacturing procedure that made the diference.

Excellent stuff.....

I wish I had a tenth the talent you have in those hands and musical mind of yours. A wonderful showcase for the talents Ken had.

Give me a Pacific or a Stancor and I am pretty sure I will still be struggling to make an Express like Ken......I wish it was that easy.

Thanks Cliff. I would have guessed the lower 5.2K I always thought the lower primary resulted in a more hifi like frequency response with midrange clarity. Whereas 6.6k would have more midrange focus. But then it is not only the transformers.
