Two Rock transformer spec sheet?

Post by Mark »

I was wondering if anyone has ordered the parts from Two Rock. It would be cool to have a set of Pacific transformers, it would be cool to know how close the Heyboer transformers are to the Pacific ones.

so many questions.

For the record I had considered buying the "kit" from Two Rock, but I never received any reply from them, and then there is the money issue. I don't have any.

Dear Luis

Two Rock are selling the remaining stock of their Ruby (Express clone) transformers, chassis, and cabs. They are selling the transformers, chassis and cab for $500.00.

Omar has put a post up about this on the forum too. You can see the reply from One the guys from Two Rock.

Guys,

I ordered one of the Two Rock "kits" this past week. As soon as I get it I will post pics and spec sheets.

I ordered a set as well - as I was told, these were made by Pacific, after a set of transformers from an amp of particular interest was sent to them for assessment... call it reverse engineering if you want to, but it's more like the parts' original manufacturer recognizing their own product and providing another exactly like it. I was also told the OT primary impedence is much higher than you'd expect for the tubes typically used - somewhere around 10k, and that that contributes alot to the wreck sound. When I get my set I will measure the reflected impedence and post.

To those of you who ordered the Two Rock kit, I would appreciate any info, pictures, specs etc from you.

I couldn't imagine the primary impedance being as high as 10K, mind you, I think something like this is happening in the RS JTM-45 transformers.

Look forward to hear from you.

Yours Sincerely

Mark Abbott.

I received my Ruby kit from Two-Rock last week and started building it up this weekend. The trannys, cab and chassis look great! A couple of things surprised me though....one, the chassis is not conductive ! (my DVM shows an open circuit between any two points on the chassis). This is not a big deal....just need to think through how I will do the grounding scheme to avoid a ground-loop. I've always used conductive steel or aluminum chassis in the past.

The second thing is that the existing chassis holes for the PT are not correct!....by that, I mean that you would not be able to get the chassis into the cab if you use the existing PT holes. I found an online pic of a Ruby, and noticed that Two-Rock drilled new holes for the PT (you can see the unused holes in this pic of an original Ruby). Anyway, I drilled new holes for the PT mounting bolts, but was able to use the existing larger hole for the PT wires. Since this causes the PT wires to enter the chassis at an angle, I added a 1/2" rubber grommet to the wire hole, to prevent the chassis from eating into the wire insulation (you can find the grommet at Home Depot).

Hopefully, the rest of you working with these Ruby kits will read this before you go too far with building up the amp...

Thanks for the info. Can you post some pics and the specs on the transformers? Is the chassis non-conductive because of the paint. In other words, if you scrape the paint layer off will your DMM show continuity?

I got my Two Rock Ruby today and it is a beautiful thing! I'll try to post pictures and all the printed info they included on Wednesday (I'm waiting to get an OK from TR on the printed materials).
I did check a couple of things though: the chassis is conductive, (I measured across the case mounting nuts) but has a heavy coat of paint; also, I measured the impedance of the output primary and came up with a ratio of ~29:1 @60hZ @8 Ohms. This translates to a measured impedance of ~6700 Ohms; pretty close to my RCA manual spec of 6500 Ohms for an AB1 pair. I did observe one kinda strange thing, though, while the transformers are labeled Pacific Transformer, they were in what appears to be an original shipping box labeled Magnetic Components, Inc. , Schiller Park, IL. I wonder if PacTran subbed these parts out?
Thanks smill86 for the tip on the Xfmr location; I know I wouldn't have caught this until I tried to fit it in the case! Could you repost the picture (s) you have of the REAL Ruby?

I am not able to post any of the info I had hoped to re the Two Rock kit.
However, I can tell you that the circuitry is VERY similar to the Kelly '90 schematic I posted on the "Q for Ampdoc1" thread on this site. The main difference is the addition of a loop.
I can be reached at ampdoc@juno.com for any particular questions.

David,
Did the guys at Two Rock say you couldn't post any info? If so, that would be pretty ironic!

ampdoc1 & Omar - you can find the real Ruby pics at the following link:

http://proguitar.de/ProGuitarPreisliste ... liste.html

You'll want to use the pulldown menu on the left under K&M and select Ruby. From there, you can click on the photos to have them enlarged. You can see from the top chassis pic that the original PT holes (closest to the front of the chassis are unused. I placed my PT in a similar location as this pic, allowing about 7/16 to 1/2" of clearance to the front of the chassis, which you will need to allow the chassis to fully install into the cab (otherwise you'll have interference with the front valence panel).

There is also a decent internal chassis pic on that website as well.

Is it paint that is on this chassis? It's so smooth, it almost feels like irridite or some other finish. Whatever it is, I really like it! It's very resistant to scratches and other abuse. In any case, the black finish doesn't seem to be conductive. I guess the captive mounting nuts are making contact with the actual Al chassis (no paint in these holes?), so I'm sure you can get continuity across these nuts.

Well, you've got to protect "proprietary" information...well, Ken's proprietary information, in this case. I'd post it, anyway without the loop and master, myself  .

What really cracks me up is this...

Custom Reverb Signature ($6k or so amp):

Mesa Boogie Stilletto:

Look at the power transformer and choke. Pretty close match. Whose EIA code is 166? I thought Mesa used Schumacher or something. Anyway, no fancy transformers for the customers' $6k apparently  .
