New Liverpool - Judy Jean
A little help please. I am getting ghosting on the high notes. Further down the neck she's glorious. Thick and crunchy straight up rock and roll amp.
Here's what I have tried.
Different speaker cabinet to rule out cone cry.
Metered every ground.
Re-ran the longer wire runs with stranded wire, exept for the two between the pots and the pre-amp board.
Tried tacking on another 22uFd to my B+1
None of the front panel controls have any effect on the ghosting. It's just easier to hear it on some settings.
My meter doesn't want to read the AC ripple on my B+, so I ordered a Fluke 179 this morning.
Suggestions?

BTW, my AC secondaries are not finalized. I want to try both sets before I cut to length.
Re: New Liverpool - Judy Jean
Awesome! all you need now is a faceplate
Have you confirmed your tubes are good? not just new.
Does your AC source share with an florcent lights or microwaves, ceiling fans, etc?
Did you test your components before you installed them?
If your grounds and wires are correct and your power and tubes are good. it's down to testing your components.
can we assume you followed the standard build plans or did you do anything custom?

Re: New Liverpool - Judy Jean
I have tried different guitars. Strat, SG and Melody Maker with a mini-HB. They all do the same thing.
I just tried jumpering across the VVR. No difference.
I have noticed that there is a slight time lag between playing a note and when the ghost note appears. Probably 200 ms or so.
I appreciate the suggestions, gents. I have been beating my head against this one for a couple of days now.

I have tried two complete sets of tubes.selloutrr wrote:Awesome! all you need now is a faceplate

I learned the hard way that I have to turn off my bench light. My other amps work ok on the same circuit.
I followed fairly standard build plans, with the following exeptions.
Paralelled first stage
Can caps
VVR
Tight twists on the heater wiring instead of the lazy loop wiring.
I didn't solder my ground bus to the back of the pots, but each pot has a grounding lug. The ground bus is only grounded at one end.
I checked my coupling caps for DC on both sides. They all seem to be blocking DC.
I double checked the build against the schematic and layout.
I didn't measure each componant before, but I did check all of the values against the schematic.
I have been considering moving the dropping string resistors directly to the caps, but I am not sure I have enough lead length left and I don't have any more 9.1K resistors.

BTW, I really have no other complaints about this amp. For as much gain as it has, it is really quiet. Very minimal hum.

R25-R28 (screens?) are 1k5 5W and not 1k 5W. Is this an issue?

Very nice build! Where did you place your 1M grid reference resistor on the input of V1a? I can see the 0.1uF cap at the input to the grid (which is correct to keep DC off the guitar's volume pot at low VVR levels) but I can't see the 1M either on the tube socket and from there to ground (correct) or on the input jack (incorrect) for a VVR installation. Just wondering about that.

Colossal,
It's hard to see, but if you look at the last of the four photos, it is under the cap next to V1A.
Thanks for the compliment. I have been working tons of hours lately, so there have been nights where I only route and solder three or four wires. But it has been a good way to de-stress.
I changed out the screen resistors to 1K. Still ghosting. It seems to dial the gain back just a hair, but not much. I still deciding if I like it or not.
VVR seems to really work well on this amp.

Ok, cool! Sorry about that. I couldn't quite make it out.Gibsonman63 wrote:Colossal,

edit: Ah yes, I checked that last photo again and I see it peeking out from under that 0.1uF

What are the filter caps you have used? They look pretty cool.
