Trainwreck Rocket..
Ok guys.
I'm considering building one, what kind of gain levels can I expect from one of these when cranked?
How is it going to re-act with a treble booster kickin' in the front end?

Re: Trainwreck Rocket..
moderate to high gain and lovely with RC booster.
Re: Trainwreck Rocket..
If built like a real Rocket, it should be mild to moderate gain. The real Rockets that I have heard or played were pretty darn clean until cranked up.
Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!
Re: Trainwreck Rocket..
Think AC30 Top Boost channel because... er... that's what it is!
My favourite clean amp through a pair of Golds as it happens, despite its great gain tones.

cut
With the cut control and a bright switch this amp is pretty twangy. +1 on the RC Booster, also a variety of good pedals sound great on this amp... OCD, Zendrive etc. Fully cranked there is a great crunch. VVR gets in in the pocket.

Re: Trainwreck Rocket..
I've got a spankin new Rocket and I've got great amount of clean headroom, some serious bass, a ton of volume, and a nice smooth overdriven tube tone when pushed. This amp is all about simplicity as I see it. The amp has a real nice blues voxy tone that I think many would agree with.
All notes are very round and have well pronounced complex harmonics. The Rocket is easy to dial in with lost of flexibility with the cut control; when cranked the amp is easy to control as the tone (and mids) can still be dialed in with ease.
The boost is a must have but the overall natural gain is quite nice. you'll want an attenuator or VVR to get to the sweet spot as Ange suggests. This 30+ watts is no joke and will have your head pounding without a way to tame her. I only wish I had more speakers and tubes to test the amp with.
My rocket build WILL replace my boutique amps! Highly recommended to add Normsters reverb to the circuit.
This is by no means a high gain amp but it's all about the tubes and it's all about TONE.
I promise to record some clips if i can get my recording software up and running again (just reformatted my cpu).

a Rocket with British iron
James,
+1 on the points above.
With no pedal & no VVR I get really great touch response from the Rocket with old P90s. It lets me throw out snarls as and when I need to, very direct - if that makes any sense.
A nice simple circuit that does justice to quality parts and is only let down by my undeveloped playing ability. It has incredible potential with the Celestion Gold.

Do you like them in an open or closed back cabinet?
Thanks.

I've got them in an open-backed Vox extension cabinet.Colossal wrote:Do you like them in an open or closed back cabinet?paulster wrote:My favourite clean amp through a pair of Golds as it happens, despite its great gain tones.
I'd love to try a quad of them in a Marshall 4x12 as it's supposed to be a fantastic combination but it's a very expensive experiment, so I've only used the pair I have open back for the time being.
Re: Trainwreck Rocket..
I like it with a single gold 1x12 cab with oval back. I like to drive the speaker harder but would like to try it as well in a 2x12 with a weber blue and a silver bell.Maybe the blue alnico and the silver bell ceramic. Or also could be awesome with a 12H30-55 and an alnico blue dog.
