what facts do we know about the wire used in the trainwreck amps.
From pictures It can concluded the heater wire is made by columbia.
20 AWG 105 degree Celcius Model # LL2625.... 1000/600 volts?
who made the original hook up wire? model numbers?

really no input? ok i do know it's not teflon and it's probably PVC but it's non irradatied ( the new wire adds to the highend in the clones, it's to good of a conductor) ... the original is a cheap wire adding high end loss.
beldon, alpha, UL, columbia?

Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
I don't think that is an issue of conductivity - more likely a characteristic of insulation dielectric, ie, capacitance from the conductor through the insulation to ground.selloutrr wrote:the new wire adds to the highend in the clones, it's to good of a conductor) ... the original is a cheap wire adding high end loss.
Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
agreed. Which make and model was originally used?

Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
Look at other pics and amps. Some heater wire was CAROL wire which you can see in pics in the files sections+. And many amps, like most builders,he used left over clippings from transformers for some things. The wireing to the boards and pots does not have any lettering on it. And many places like Carol make hookup wire. Other resale places may have their brand name on a wire made for them by a wire company. NTE wire, you can get looks very similar, and is good wire. From pictures It can concluded the heater wire is made by columbia.

Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
Thank you, unfortunately new production wire wont work it's radiated giving it a better high frequency response. not a plus for an already unstable and bright amp.
I've read KF used transformer clippings and I have several dead stancor transformers I can harvest from.
I'm more concerned about the colored hookup wire.
I'm trying to track down the make or model number so I can hunt it down. The more I can learn the easier the hunt. It's the last missing piece to time period correct parts clones. I was able to track down the red Columbia heater wire, a few months back off ebay. I had to buy a bulk lot of wire. was hoping the rest of the columbia wire would have been the hookup wire he used, but it was stranded.

Good luck in your quest!
You found the right preamp cathode bypass caps?

yes, rubycon 22uf 25v / 10uf 100v and 160v axials.
as well as original orange drop mallory's.
I've spent years tracking down parts.
I also have a question about which power transformer was originally used. make / model.

Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
what I do know about the power transformer. If the voltages are right it will work. it's not key in the tone as much as looks. With that said, not sure of the exact model #'s i do know they where different depending on what was available. stancor, pacific, thorn(something)... looking through the stancor catalog i'm having a hard time finding a match for the pacific transformer specs.

Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
might i suggest....
300-0-300 6.3v @7.5 amps is the target voltage
It might be that KF used television power transformers not dedicated Amplifier PT's.
possibly the
stancor P-8164 300-0-300 @8.5
stancor P-8167 280-0-280 @ 9
the catalog is pretty old does anyone have a new maybe 80's product line brochure? the A-3801 is included in this catalog.

I thought that the Stancor P-8164 was the closet in that catalog?

Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
Which 3801's do you have? The newer ones have the gray bell covers right? I have the old ones out of that catalog that have cloth covered wire and black covers. Don't know the exact dates though..

Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
IMHO, The main thing about the wire in an express build is do not use teflon wire. I used a mix of 20 AWG solid with proper colors and tranny clipings for the outputs, also 18 AWG stranded red and black ROHS for the heaters My amp runs quite from clean to mean
I got my wire from various places. Older wire can sometimes be found at electronic and TV shops.
Re: Wire, Wire, Wire
You keep saying that but why??? If the irradiated insulation has less capacitance to ground, why not MEASURE the difference, determine the necessary adjustment value, and add snubbers to ground to compensate for the difference in SOUND and PERFORMANCE?selloutrr wrote:Thank you, unfortunately new production wire wont work it's radiated giving it a better high frequency response. not a plus for an already unstable and bright amp.
Whether you use your ears or metrology, it can be done.
