New TWXpress build

Post by loupy31 »

Hi Everyone,
this is my first build of this kind, most have been on a PCB,
please have a look and let me know if you find any problems.
just a few wires to go and will be ready to test, fingers crossed.

Peter,
That's some nice neat work you have going on there. I'm a fairly new builder, but everything appears to be in pretty good shape. I just finished my first Trainwreck Express clone, in fact, I am in the process of building a headcab for it. If you have never played thru an Express, you are in for a treat. Bad to the bone! If you are going to do a traditional Cherry headcab, and need help locating some decent lumber, shoot me a PM. I have a source. 8)

loupy,

Its looking good I was going to make a comment about the lazy loop wiring being excessive but then I looked a picture of real TW and it was about the same. :)

Wow lot of Trainwrecks being born lately, nice.

So many Expresses!

Very curious as to how everything works out for you. Looking good!

Thanks Guys, I am looking to do the testing on the weekend, I need to read through the notes on testing voltages and such, any addvice would be great.

One thing that I'm glad I did was to form the filter caps through a 100K series resistor as demonstrated here: http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=8396

This worked REALLY well to get the power supply up to snuff.

If you have one or know someone that has one of those Weber Bias Rite meter tools, it makes biasing a breeze. Also, one thing that confused me a little was the heater voltages measuring about 3v against ground instead or the prescribed 6.3 volts. If you measure both sides of heater wires, rather than to ground you should get 6+ volts. But be careful because unless you have a clip on one of your leads, it kind of forces you to break the one hand rule. Get the clip on lead. Just a newbie problem I had that wasn't really a problem at all. From the looks of your build, you should be up and running in no time!

Thanks Jim
I cant seem to find the info on how to test the voltage and bias,
I know i have it some where but cant find it.......there is always onething that happens lol.

Nice looking work Peter! Let us know how the testing goes. If I recall correctly you are in the land down under... there seems to be a lot of Wreck activity going on there. I can hear it now "Wreckfest in Oz - turn it up". Looking forward to your report! rj

Hi RJ,
Good to hear from you, its been a while since I started this amp,
I have been looking for a schematic for making a bias plug/socket.
Once I make that and do some circuit checking, I will be ready for testing.

I would like to say at this time that your assistance from the begining has been first class, Thankyou very much, I will keep you informed.

Regards Peter

I built one of these...

In my express, I grounded the power tubes through 1Ohm resistors on jacks to measure bias.

Lookin good Peter!

I did note in the 0539 picture from 6/1/10 that it looked like your PI coupling caps were "backwards". All of the other pictures that I have seen show those with the black line facing the front of the amp.

Not sure how important that really is....but....thought it worthy of note nonetheless.

Good luck,
Dave O.
