polystyrene cap in xpress...Wow!

Post by KellyBass »

Just got a few CRL 500pf 630v polystyrene caps in the mail the other day (for another project) and thought I might toss one in one of my expresses in the 500pf slot between the plate on v1a and the treble pot. I replaced a silver mica cap.

Wow! I gotta tell ya...I'm very impressed! It took a TON of nasty edge off this amp and everything overall seems much more civilized. I'm gonna stock up on these in a lot of different values...

Keep it quiet on the Polystyrenes. They don't make them anymore and I don't want to pay big bucks for them either. they have been my secret weapon for years. Watch the heat when soldering , they are a bit delicate. 8)

Has anybody used the larger values for coupling caps?

I see most of the ones available are not very large in values.

The larger ones get pretty expensive. Conrad Johnson used them and they sound fantastic. I figured for guitar work they were overkill. But then again, I would love to hear an Amp done up with them.

In regard to larger values, aren't the Orange Drop PS series polystyrene?

Orange drops are Polyester or Polypropylene. I forget which is which. I know from ancient experiments I thought the Polypropylene's were too Sterile( subjective I know ) for my guitar amps.

Read something good about certain polycarbonate caps somewhere. Maybe we should start winding our own ...

Yep..my bad. Just did a quick perusing and the PS series up to 1000V are polyester.

I was the one drinking the cool-aid!!

Sorry for the confusion,
Dave O.
