Rocket and Dynaco A470?

For some reason I have it in my head that KF used the Dynaco A470 in his Rockets - am I hallucinating (again ) or is this the case? Thanks amigos.

Well here was the problem I had obtaining Rocket transformers two years ago. Toneslut did not have the trannies at that time and said go directly to Heyboer for the PT and get the Dyaclone A-470-S for the OT.

I then ordered the OT from Triode Stores and a PT from rjguitar for my build.

One has to defer to other means at times going with transformer sources we currently have. I am not alone in this quest and have tried to post sources to help.

I had exactly the same problem a couple of years ago. I wound up buying a couple of sets directly from Phil at Heyboer, but it cost me a little more.

At present I would recommend RJ (rjuitars).
He is sourcing trannies since Toneslut has gotten out of that particular business for the time being, and he's buying enough of a quantity that he's getting better than 1 piece prices. Savings that he's passing on to TAG members.

Also he is sourcing multiple manufacturers so you have multiple choices.

He's great to work with and his prices are very reasonable.

I've got a whole Garage full of iron now - Pacific, Heyboer, and Edcor.

I just received the "Vintage Output trannies for the Express amps and I've got the 5.2K's for the Liverpool and HTS-8093 for the Rockets as well.

Here is a note that Phil from Heyboer sent to me before I ordered the Rocket output transformers:

...in the winding of A-470 Mod. HTS-8093-1 this one still has all its original windings/interleaves , the differance was in the steel. M-19 was used in this -1 , VS. grain oriented M-6 ( hi end ) steel. so m-19 is whats a bit more flavored toward guitar amp and takes some of the "hi fi" out of it...

I'm not sure if everyone agrees that the windings and interleaves are the same in the original Wreck Rocket output trannies or not, but it seems clear that this is what you will get if you order an HTS-8093-1.

Can anybody define in words how the "HiFi" part of the sound differs from the guitar amp sound?

I have not used these transformers nor have I built a wreck, but as always I have an opinion!

The way I understand it is that M6 is "more efficient" whereas M19 is not as "efficient." M6 will give a flatter response and impart less of its own coloration into the sound. M19, because of the characteristics of the material, is less than an ideal material for the laminations (or I should say less than ideal compared to M6 since nothing is perfect). M19, therefore has a more musical quality to it when in guitar amps, kind of like a CC resistor that imparts its own mojo (or so it is claimed).

That is my understanding. HiFi = perfection, guitar amp = imperfection selected with a purpose.
