Re: Gibson Historic potentiometer....
I updated the Excel file on page three of this thread to include the Alpha pot data.
Looks like a pretty good taper. Since that pot is from 2004, I am not sure which particular pot would need to be purchased. I know which Gibson Historic to buy and they are pretty cheap, IMO.

Pots
I ordered 2 Gibson historics for my "79" KM Les Paul,Later I read the pots might have issues with the legnth,Do you think these will fit my Les Paul.

Yup
I know, I know. Who knows where to find that taper again. I just ordered some Alphas at Mouser and two arrived with 540k.... I'll check the tapers now.
Ok, off the shelf straight line Audio Taper 533k - exhibits a similar curve to the C-lab in the first 40% rotation then it varies a bit. I'll post a curve shortly.
Red dots are a Linear pot from the same guitar.

WOW!
Ok, so what are the exact Alphas to order? heh that is what I need lots of for spares.

Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.
Correction
The last plot with blue dots is a Bourns .25w 500k PDB241 GTR01-504A2

Re: Gibson Historic potentiometer....
Repeating this post from the D section. Someone suggested looking at pot taper as dB change near the extremes of rotation. I made some numbers to fill in a plot of attenuation vs. rotation for true log, linear, and the bi-linear taper that is common in real "audio taper" pots. In the plot below the rapidity with which the linear pot comes up relative to the log is clearly shown. The bi-linear comes up faster than a true log curve, and also has a jump where the slope change occurs. They are both "10%" in that they are both 20dB down at 50% rotation.

Correct shaft legnth
Hey Guys ,Im kinda jumping in here after the fact.I got the new gibson pots and they are to short. Can you guys give me a correct option for a 79 les paul.Ill sell these 2 pots,Mikey
Re: Gibson Historic potentiometer....
I have a '96 with the long shafts. You can rebuild the pots. Basically disassemble and substitute the trace (and the pot back if you feel inclined). It's not the shaft that makes the pots special.
I hear where guys have pulled the whole business out of the cavity and switched to small pots but I somehow suspect there is some routing to be done. ? Could be wrong.

Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
Pots
I think Ill just get the long shaft pots,Any favs with you guys,Mikey
Re: Gibson Historic potentiometer....
Mike, well, if you do this you will miss the taper. They don't offer this taper in the long shaft pots. That said, if you still want to walk this path, try rsguitarworks.com for their version maybe. They're OK.

Re: Gibson Historic potentiometer....
Somebody told me that dimarzio has a long shaft pot made by CTS with a nice taper but I haven't tried it. That could be a good option. You can test it with a multimeter so we can compare.

Re: Gibson Historic potentiometer....
Hi All,
After reading and reading all the advice and assistance you all provide to people like me on this forum, especially in light of the fact that I will be starting my first Express build in a few weeks time, I am very glad to be making my first contribution to this forum.
I found this topic very interesting, especially since I own a 2010 R9 with these "new" Historic pots in it. I also have a 1995 LP Studio which I also wanted to upgrade the electronics to be of a similar spec, and so was in the same boat as many of those who have posted above, in that I wanted a pot with a similar taper to the Historic pot, but in a long shaft so it fits a USA Les Paul.
In the background to all the graph plotting that you guys have been doing on that Excel spreadsheet, I've collected data for 2, 500k Gibson Long shaft audio pots, one which measured 417K and one which measured 529K, and after plotting their points on the same graph, the curves are so close to the Historic pots graphs, that I can conclude that Gibson are using the same taper in these pots as they are in the Historic pots. In fact, it could very well even be the same wafer.
Hope this helps those of you looking for long shaft pots with this taper.
Regards,
Shaun

Re: Gibson Historic potentiometer....
Agreed Miles, a 20% tolerance is pretty poor from Gibson.
I wonder if these are anything special. The tolerance and taper seems correct.

StewMac has CTS pots with 10% tolerance spec, short or long bushing, split knurled or round shaft, $8 ea. Anybody tried these? http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics ... ab=Details
