BLT , that's what I've been thinking, maybe they'll last a lot longer as they've got quite a hard life in theses amps.

How does a carbon resistor go tits up? did it actually smoke... maybe to much heat when soldering... though unlikely?
Did you try lowering the first stage plate resistor, I just put a 120k on mine and think the amp is much more playable, it also puts the volume control in a position where the bright cap sounds good with good clean output.
I have always thought changes in valves is subtle... and then sometimes you swap over some pre-amp valves and the changes are massive, from nice to ugly and visa versa... unfortunately you don't know until you try

Mike, I haven't changed anything yet, going to give that a go though.
That resistor was fine since I built the amp then one morning I put the amp on and it was making horrible sounds!!! I chop sticked around and found it was that resistor. When touched it made awful noises, so I replaced it and all is well.
I was surprised about the lack of any noticeable change in sound going to the Russian military valves, thought they might make a sonic difference......NO...

That is awesome build! I am building rocket my self and at the moments searching about inner and outer foil capacitors and trying understand it right.. I watched this clip.. So did you position you foil capacitors right way?
