I have an Avatar Contemporary 2x12 with Scumbacks in it that would probably make anything sound good.

I'd also look into a 1x12 Theile type cab with an EVM-12 in it...The EVM's are pretty linear and if your amps sounds good, they'll sound good.

yes for the most part not cabinet will totally suck just some will sound better then others, this subjective to the listener, the speakers, the amount of use on the speakers, the amp, setting, instrument, player, and room.

some amps are voiced by the manufacture, (i.e. Tranwrecks - Ampeg V4 4x12 cabinet laoded with PreRola's), for use with certain speakers but that does not mean you have to run it with only that speaker.

This also brings up the potential in voicing or re-voicing doesn't it?

In theory one could have a KF Voiced original hooked up to the 4x12 pre-rolas on one side piping out the most authentic tone and then have another TW inspired/cloned etc on the other side hooked up to another cab/speaker of choice and through a/b testing get the b side as close to a side as possible.

Not saying any speaker can be substituted to replace the 4x12 pre-rolas of course but simply trying to point out that an amp could be voiced / tweaked to suit new speakers should old originals become unavailable. This is exactly what KF would do from my understanding of his approach.

Am I on the right track here?

yes that is basically what the new JM builds are.

You could take it a step farther use
a prerecorded guitar signal so both amps get the same signal
an SPL meter for volume matching
a scope for clipping wave form monitoring while you balance the EQ and input stages.
You could probably use an RTA to help fine tune,
and a switcher box so you could use the same speaker cabinet.

You can go a step farther and test the tubes of a voiced wreck in the amplitrex AT1000, print out specs and curve traces, store the data and use it to find the best match between other tubes.

If you had access to the insides of an actual Wreck you could meter the parts and get closer faster.

This is amazing. There is a lot of science behind it after all besides simply saying he/she who has good ears can listen to A and voice B to match... Thanks for sharing.

the trick/magic is coming up with "A" (KF) getting "B" to sound like "A" might take some time but it's just science. (JM) and the more you have going for you the easier it is. i.e. Acess to parts that "A" was built with.

That reminds me, once I get some time to do so I need to go pick up the HP distortion analyzer out of the PAiA labs. I don't have a setup for doing FFTs at all right now :/.

That's a HP 3562A. Dual channel, so it's easy to compare two amps. :D

So...

Bring it on. 8)

looks like I get to purchase a new toy :)
Found several on Ebay. Send it out to be serviced and calibrated w/ certificate and it should be good as new.

here is my thought. Based on this/JM's style of voicing what's stopping someone from renting actual Trainwrecks and voicing clones to match?

Maybe we could rent a hotel meeting room set up a voicing station charge a small fee to cover rental costs and bring our clones to test voicing. maybe have a prize for best voiced and closest voiced. logo?

Anyone who owns an HP 3562A is the power supply modular? I've found close to 6 dozen online all with the same "does not power up" problem. Which points me to think it's an easy fix for an HP service tech because it should be outlined in tech notes, or possible to remove the power section and hookup an external supply that is more robust. I'll get a service quote and see how much it'll cost to get one up and running.
